Chapter 5 - A Web of Lies

"The money is just part of it," Chloe interjected, her voice cutting through the tense air like a scalpel. She crossed her arms, standing beside her father as a united front for the first time in months. "Ask her where she goes every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, Dad. She doesn't go to the community center volunteer work she keeps logging on the family calendar."

David turned his slow, calculating gaze back to his wife. Sarah looked like a trapped animal, her blonde hair sticking to her damp forehead as she realized the sheer magnitude of the trap closing around her. The meticulous lies she had woven over the last four years were unraveling thread by thread, leaving her entirely exposed in the unforgiving light of the living room.

"Well, Sarah?" David demanded, taking a slow step toward her. "Where are you going when you tell me you're helping out at the shelter?"

"Nowhere!" Sarah cried, shaking her head frantically. "I swear to God, David, I was just meeting up with a book club, or running errands! Chloe is making up a conspiracy because she wants me out of this house so she can have you all to herself!"

"A book club that meets at an industrial storage facility across town?" Chloe asked smoothly, pulling out her own phone from her hoodie pocket and tapping the screen. "Because I managed to track the GPS tag on your car key fob last month when you left it on the kitchen island. Look familiar, Sarah?"

Chloe tapped her screen and held it up. Reflected in the glass was a high-resolution photo of Sarah’s white sedan parked outside a secure commercial storage facility in the industrial district, taken by an automated toll camera.

David stared at the phone, then back at his wife. The betrayal deepened, shifting from mere financial deception into something far darker and more systemic. "Why do you have a storage unit, Sarah? We have a three-car garage and a fully finished basement attic."

"I needed space for my things," Sarah muttered, her voice dropping to a sullen, defiant whisper as she realized denial was no longer an option. "My old furniture from my previous apartment. Things I didn't want to clutter your precious house with."

"My father's vintage watch collection was in that safe too," David said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Is that in your storage unit as well?"

Sarah didn't answer. She looked down at the floor, her jaw clenching as she refused to meet his eyes. The silence in the room stretched out, thick and suffocating. David exhaled slowly, his hand tightening around the tablet until his knuckles turned white.

"We are going to that storage unit right now," David announced, turning toward the front door. "And you are going to unlock every single box."

Sarah didn't move. Instead, a chilling, humorless smile slowly crept across her face as she reached into the pocket of her cardigan.
