Chapter 2 - The Draft of Memory

The sudden rush of frigid air made Clara gasp, the stale odor filling her lungs like poison. It smelled of damp earth and rusted metal, completely at odds with the modern, sunlit hallway. Eleanor collapsed against the wall, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps as if the very act of opening the door had physically drained her.

"Clara, stop!" Sarah shouted from down the hall, holding a trembling Lily tighter against her pregnant frame. "You don't know what you're letting out!"

Clara ignored them all. Her eyes remained locked on the narrow dark space revealed behind the heavy oak paneling. The room beyond was pitch black, swallowing the hallway light as if it possessed a physical mass. She took a half-step forward, her sensible dark pants rustling softly against the floorboards.

"You've been lying to me my entire life," Clara said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. She didn't look back at Eleanor. "Every single memory, every rule, every locked door in this house—it was all a cage, wasn't it?"

Eleanor pressed her palms flat against the wall, shaking her head vigorously. Her blonde updo had begun to unravel, a few loose strands framing her pale, aged face. "We protected you, Clara. Protection isn't a cage. What’s inside that room doesn’t belong in the light of day. Close it. Please, for the sake of the children."

Clara glanced down the hall toward Sarah and little Lily. Lily’s crying had quieted into soft, rhythmic hiccups, but the stuffed white rabbit still clutched in her small arms looked like a shield against an invisible monster. Sarah’s hand rested protectively over her protruding belly, her eyes begging Clara to back away.

"If it's the truth, I have a right to see it," Clara retorted, her grip tightening on the brass door handle.

She swung the door open another few inches. The darkness inside seemed to shift, casting strange, elongated shadows across the floorboards. A faint metallic clinking sound echoed from the far corner of the dark room, rhythmic and deliberate, like a heavy chain dragging across concrete.

Eleanor let out a sharp cry, pushing herself off the wall and diving toward Clara with unexpected agility. "No!" she yelled, her fingers clawing at Clara’s shoulder to drag her away from the threshold.

Clara whipped around, her temper flaring hotter than before. She shoved Eleanor back hard, sending the older woman stumbling into the antique hallway table. A heavy ceramic vase tipped over, shattering loudly against the floor.

Silence fell instantly over the hallway, broken only by Sarah’s sharp intake of breath as she stared down at the broken porcelain. But Clara’s eyes weren't on the mess. They were fixed on the doorway, where a pale hand had just emerged from the darkness, gripping the inner frame.
