Chapter 14 - The Trap Closes

The heavy click of the steel lock reverberated down the concrete stairwell like a gunshot. Clara froze, the blood draining instantly from her face. She dropped the medical file on the mahogany desk and bolted toward the stairs, her dark pants sweeping against the metal steps as she sprinted upward.
"David! The door!" Clara shouted, her heart hammering against her ribs with terrifying intensity.
David was right behind her, taking the steps three at a time with athletic precision. He reached the heavy metal landing at the top and threw his weight against the solid wooden panel, slamming his shoulder into the grain. The door didn't even budge. It was locked tight from the outside, reinforced by the automated security system.
"Mom!" Clara screamed, pressing her fists against the wood, her voice cracking with pure panic. "Open this door right now! Eleanor! Let us out!"
From the other side of the door, muffled by the thick insulation, came the faint sound of footsteps walking away down the bright hallway. Then, a calm, steady voice filtered through the wood—Eleanor’s voice, devoid of all emotion.
"I’m sorry, Clara," Eleanor said, her words carrying clearly through the intercom speaker hidden near the frame. "I couldn't let you burn the rest of the house down. Some secrets have to stay buried in the dark, or the entire foundation collapses."
"You locked us in?" David yelled, his fists hammering furiously against the wood. "You insane old woman, open this door before I tear this house apart brick by brick!"
Down in the subterranean vault, the amber lighting suddenly flickered and shifted to a harsh, flashing crimson. A mechanical hum vibrated through the concrete floor, followed by the heavy, ominous sound of secondary blast doors sliding shut over the lower exits.
Clara turned around on the landing, looking down into the red-tinted archive room. The escape route was gone. They were sealed inside the experimental wing with no way out, caught in the very trap Eleanor had spent thirty years perfecting.
"She’s locking down the entire estate," David said, his voice dropping as he stared down at the control panel on the mahogany desk, where a digital timer had just appeared, counting down from ten minutes.

On the live video feed on the laptop screen, Eleanor could be seen walking calmly down the hall toward the front exit, holding little Lily’s hand while Sarah followed close behind, arguing frantically. Evelyn stood in her doorway, laughing silently into the empty air as the crimson light washed over her pale face.
