Chapter 10 - The Vault Below

The tarnished brass key glinted under the harsh hallway lights, swinging slowly on its steel ring like a pendulum measuring out the remaining seconds of their shattered lives. Clara stared at it, the horror of what lay beneath the floorboards eclipsing every other thought in her mind.
"A vault?" Sarah whispered, her voice shaking violently as she rubbed her pregnant belly, stepping back toward the stairs. "David, what are you talking about? This is a house, not a prison camp."
"To us, it was both," David replied, his jaw tight as he stood up, towering over Eleanor who remained huddled on the floor. He looked down at the older woman with a mixture of pity and enduring malice. "Mom designed the extension herself back in the seventies. Soundproof walls, reinforced steel doors, independent air filtration. A self-contained ecosystem for the family’s dirty laundry."
Evelyn chuckled, a dry, grating sound that made the hair on the back of Clara’s neck stand up. "She always was an interior designer of nightmares. She picked out the wallpaper for my cell herself. Very cheerful daisies. I used to count the petals until I forgot what a real flower looked like."
"Shut up, Evelyn!" Eleanor snapped with a sudden flash of her old fire, pushing herself up from the floor with the aid of the baseboard. Her navy blue dress was stained with dust and a smudge of dried blood from her thumb, but her eyes flashed with desperate defiance. "I did what I had to do to keep this family from tearing itself apart! If I hadn't taken control, the creditors would have stripped us of everything, and we would have ended up in the gutter!"
"So you chose murder and imprisonment instead of bankruptcy?" Clara yelled, her fury finally boiling over. She stepped right up to Eleanor, her beige button-down shirt brushing against the older woman’s navy fabric. "You traded human lives for floorboards and bank accounts?"
"I traded weakness for survival!" Eleanor screamed back, her voice echoing down the corridor.
Little Lily let out a sharp cry at the sudden volume, burying her face deeply into Sarah’s side. Sarah glared at them both, her face pale with terror. "Stop it! Both of you! Look at Lily! Look at my baby! If you don't stop screaming right now, I'm taking the car and leaving this cursed house forever."
David stepped between them, holding up a hand to quell the argument. He looked down at the heavy brass key in his palm. "We aren't leaving until we open the vault, Sarah. Because inside that room isn't just paperwork and bones. There’s something else. Something Mom has been guarding even closer than the deeds."
Clara frowned, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "What are you talking about, David? What else could possibly be down there?"
May you like
David didn't answer immediately. He turned his gaze toward the end of the hall, where a secondary, unmarked door sat flush against the wood-paneled wall—a door Clara had walked past ten thousand times without ever realizing it had a keyhole.
