Chapter 1 - The First Threshold

The bright hallway hummed with a sterile, suffocating energy that cut straight to the bone. Clara’s dark hair, pinned tightly into a low bun, felt as though the strands were pulling against her skull, matching the frantic rhythm of her pulse. Her beige button-down shirt stuck uncomfortably to her skin. Eleanor, her mother, stood directly in her path, a solid wall of sixty-year-old stubbornness wrapped in a navy blue dress.

"Get out of my way!" Clara yelled, her voice cracking with a raw, jagged fury that echoed off the polished hardwood floors.

Eleanor didn't budge an inch, her blonde updo holding fast as she raised a hand defensively. "Clara, you are not thinking clearly. Look around you. You cannot undo what is behind that wood."

"I said move!" Clara shoved hard against Eleanor’s shoulders, the older woman stumbling backward under the unexpected force.

Down the corridor, five-year-old Lily stood frozen in the doorway of the forbidden room, her yellow dress bright against the shadows. Clutching her stuffed white rabbit to her chest, the little girl began to cry loudly, a sound of pure terror. Beside Lily stood Sarah, her thirty-year-old pregnant sister, rubbing her swollen belly with one hand while trying to comfort the child with the other. Sarah’s face was pale, her blonde hair framing wide, panicked eyes.

Clara spun back toward them, her expression twisting into a mask of pure aggression.

"Mommy!" Clara screamed furiously, her voice dripping with years of deep-seated resentment and betrayal directed straight at Eleanor.

"Never touch me again!" Clara shouted, lunging forward as Eleanor recovered her footing.

They collided near the heavy wooden door, their hands instinctively flying out to grab each other's arms in a desperate struggle. Clara’s fingers dug into Eleanor’s navy fabric, while Eleanor gripped Clara’s wrists with surprising strength.

Clara reached past her mother, her shaking fingers wrapping around the cold brass handle of the wooden door. Eleanor lunged forward in absolute panic, her face contorted in horror.

"Don’t! Open that door!" Eleanor screamed, her voice breaking into a terrified shriek.

Clara pulled the handle down anyway, and as the heavy latch gave way, a freezing blast of air rushed out from the dark room, carrying the distinct scent of old dust and iron.
