Chapter 7: The Alliance of the Dispossessed

The dim light of the safehouse desk lamp illuminated the tired faces of the three adults as David scrolled through a list of independent journalists and federal investigators who had previously attempted to probe the Vance Foundation’s financial dealings. Most had been discredited, fired, or driven out of the industry by coordinated smear campaigns orchestrated by Marcus’s legal team.
"There's one person left who might be able to help," David said, pausing his cursor over a name near the bottom of the encrypted directory. "Special Agent Vance—no relation, thankfully. Agent Miller works out of the federal field office three states over. She’s been building a racketeering case against the Vance Corporation's shell companies for two years, but she lacks the internal documentation needed to pierce the corporate veil."
Julian leaned closer to the screen, reading Miller’s professional bio and case history. "She’s outside Elena’s regional sphere of influence. If we bring the physical documents and the digital backups directly to her office, they can’t intercept it before it’s logged into federal evidence."
"It’s a long drive," Sarah noted, glancing toward the couch where Clara was sleeping. "And if Elena’s security team is tracking our financial footprint, using our credit cards or phones will alert them to our route within minutes."
"That's why we leave the phones here," Julian said firmly. "We take cash, we drive a car that isn't registered to either of us, and we move by back roads."
David nodded in agreement, sliding the brown document folder into a waterproof sleeve and handing it to Julian. "Take this. Guard it with your life. Once Miller has the originals, Elena’s house of cards starts to collapse. But be warned: once they realize you're heading across state lines, they won't just use lawyers anymore. Elena protects her legacy by any means necessary."

Julian took the folder, feeling its substantial weight. He looked at Sarah, seeing the fear in her eyes tempered by a fierce, unyielding courage. They were no longer running just to escape; they were running to strike back.
As they packed their few remaining belongings into David’s old sedan parked in the alley below, Julian felt a cold wind whip through the industrial district. The journey ahead was fraught with peril, but for the first time since walking out of that bright, sterile kitchen, Julian felt that the outcome was no longer entirely in Elena’s hands.
