Chapter 5: The Breach at the Gate

Navigating the overgrown perimeter of the Vance estate required absolute silence. Julian carried Clara in a front-facing baby carrier, keeping his movements fluid and deliberate, while Sarah stayed close behind, her hand resting firmly on the back of his maroon shirt to keep from losing him in the dense fog rolling in from the nearby river. The iron security fence loomed ahead, its razor-wire crown glinting dully in the gray morning light.

"The manual override box is behind the junction panel," Julian whispered, pointing toward a gray metal utility housing bolted to a brick pillar. "Marcus forgot to update the cipher code after the last audit. If my memory serves me right, the bypass sequence hasn't changed."

Sarah kept watch down the access road, her eyes straining against the thick mist. "Hurry, Julian. I hear a vehicle engine in the distance."

Julian’s fingers flew across the keypad inside the utility box, entering a sequence of numbers based on an old corporate anniversary date Elena used for everything. A soft green LED blinked twice, and with a heavy metallic clunk, the magnetic lock on the side pedestrian gate disengaged. The gate swung outward a few inches, revealing the gravel shoulder of the public highway beyond.

"Got it," Julian breathed, grabbing Sarah’s hand. "Let’s go."

They slipped through the opening just as the twin beam of an approaching SUV swept across the interior access road. Ducking behind a thick stand of pine trees on the outer shoulder, Julian watched as Elena’s black Mercedes SUV pulled up to the utility box, its hazard lights flashing rhythmically. Marcus stepped out from the passenger side, his briefcase in hand, looking around with a scowl as he inspected the unlocked gate.

"They know we went this way," Sarah whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Let them look," Julian said, pulling her deeper into the tree line where an old Ford sedan sat idling in the shadows. The window rolled down, revealing David Chen’s weathered, exhausted face. David gestured frantically for them to get in the back seat.

Julian bundled Clara inside, sliding in after Sarah and pulling the heavy door shut with a muffled click. David immediately pulled away from the curb, accelerating smoothly onto the highway without turning on his headlights until they were safely around the first bend.

"You're a hard man to reach, Julian," David said, glancing nervously into the rearview mirror. "And you brought more trouble than I expected."

"Did you get it?" Julian asked, leaning forward over the center console.

David tapped a battered brown document folder sitting on the passenger seat. "Got it and scanned it. What’s inside those pages is enough to put Elena away for a decade. But getting it to the right people before her security team locks down the regional network is going to take everything we have."
