Chapter 11: The Federal Threshold

The federal field office in the capital district was a monolithic structure of gray limestone and mirrored glass, standing cold and imposing against the pale morning sky. Julian and Sarah walked up the broad stone steps, their shoes clicking rhythmically against the pavement. Clara was awake now, peering curiously at the towering pillars flanking the main entrance through the mesh of the front-carrying harness.

"This is it," Julian said, pausing before the heavy glass doors to adjust the strap of the brown document folder resting securely beneath his arm. "Once we walk through those metal detectors and hand this file to Agent Miller, there’s no turning back."

Sarah reached out, her hand resting briefly over Julian’s heart, feeling the steady beat beneath his maroon shirt. Her olive-green shirt was rumpled from their long journey, but her eyes held a fierce, unwavering clarity. "We aren't turning back, Julian. We're finishing this."

They stepped through the revolving doors into the sterile, high-security lobby. Armed federal protection officers stood behind a raised security desk, their expressions impassigned and watchful. Julian approached the counter, keeping his movements slow and deliberate to avoid raising any alarms.

"I'm Julian Vance," he stated clearly, looking the senior officer in the eye. "We have an appointment with Special Agent Miller regarding corporate racketeering and document forgery involving the Vance Foundation. We need to present physical evidence immediately."

The officer punched a series of keys into his terminal, his eyes scanning the glowing monitor before flicking up to inspect Julian and Sarah. "Identification, please."

Julian handed over his driver's license, while Sarah provided hers. The officer verified the numbers against an encrypted internal roster, then pressed a buzzer beneath the desk. A heavy magnetic lock on the inner security gate clicked open with a sharp mechanical thud.

"Third floor, office 312," the officer instructed, gesturing toward the private elevators. "Agent Miller has been notified of your arrival. Step directly to her door."

The elevator ride to the third floor felt agonizingly slow. The polished stainless-steel walls reflected their tired faces—survivors of a gilded cage now standing at the precipice of justice. When the doors slid open, they stepped out into a quiet, sunlit hallway lined with frosted glass offices. Agent Miller was already waiting for them outside her door, her sharp eyes taking in their travel-worn appearance with professional assessment.

"Mr. and Mrs. Vance," Miller said, stepping forward to shake Julian’s hand firmly. "Come inside before the morning briefings start. I've been waiting for someone inside that foundation to finally grow a conscience."
