Chapter 9 - The Swiss Freeze

The color drained completely from Evelyn Vance’s face, leaving her looking remarkably old and fragile beneath the harsh overhead chandelier. The arrogant smirk she had worn just moments before vanished entirely, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated panic as Marcus Vance’s tablet chimed softly, signaling an incoming secure transmission.
"Confirmed," Marcus announced, reading the scrolling text on his screen with a satisfied grin. "The Zurich holding account has been locked by the Swiss Federal Banking Commission. All funds are frozen pending a full international fraud investigation. Owen's automated transfer just hit a brick wall."
Evelyn staggered backward, her maroon dress rustling loudly as the back of her knees hit the edge of the mahogany vanity. She grabbed the edge of the glass tabletop to steady herself, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.
"That's... that's impossible," Evelyn whispered, staring blankly at the floor. "Owen said the compliance waiver bypassed international oversight. He spent six months programming the security protocols with his associates in Geneva."
"Your son is a brilliant thief, Evelyn, but he's a terrible lawyer," my father said coldly, stepping between her and the door with an expression of absolute contempt. "He forgot that under Swiss banking law enacted last year, any automated corporate wire originating from a domestic wedding venue requires dual-factor biometric confirmation if the account holder's name is flagged as a primary beneficiary. Clara never verified it."
I looked down at my left hand, where my diamond engagement ring had been violently ripped away just minutes ago. The naked skin of my ring finger felt cold, but my spirit felt warmer and stronger than it had in years. They had tried to strip me of everything—my dignity, my father's legacy, my home, and my future—all wrapped up in the innocent packaging of white lace and wedding vows.
"Take her away," my father instructed the security guard standing near the door. "Make sure she’s booked into a separate holding facility from her son so they don't coordinate their alibis before the arraignment tomorrow morning."
The guard nodded firmly, grabbing Evelyn by the arm. She didn't fight back this time. Her shoulders slumped forward, defeated by the very legal system she and her son had tried to weaponize against our family. As they led her out of the bridal suite, the heavy silence of the room rushed back in, broken only by the hum of the air conditioning unit.
I walked over to the shattered full-length mirror, looking at my reflection. My updo was coming undone, stray strands of dark hair framing my face, and the white wedding dress was stained with dust and tears. Yet, I had never looked more alive.
"We need to head back to the office, Clara," my father said softly, walking over and placing a gentle hand on my shoulder. "Marcus has already filed the emergency injunctions to recover the Savannah condo and seize Owen's personal assets. The wedding guests have all been sent home with a prepared statement regarding an unforeseen medical emergency."
I took a deep breath, letting the familiar scent of white lilies fade from my senses as I turned to face my father. "Let's go, Dad. I want to be there when they read the charges."
We walked out of the bridal suite together, stepping past the ruined doorway and down the long hotel corridor. But just as we reached the private elevator at the end of the hall, my father’s cell phone rang with a harsh, jarring ringtone that made us both freeze in our tracks.
My father pulled the device from his pocket, glanced at the caller ID, and his face instantly turned pale.

"It's the county jail," my father whispered, pressing accept. "Sterling speaking... What do you mean he's gone?"
