Chapter 3 - The Knock on the Door

"Clara? Honey, are you in there?" Owen’s voice drifted through the heavy oak door, dripping with a sickeningly sweet concern that made my stomach violently churn. "The minister is waiting, and everyone is wondering where you ran off to. Open the door, babe."

I froze in the center of the bridal suite, my phone still pressed tightly against my ear. My father’s sharp voice hissed through the speaker, cutting through the panic ringing in my ears like a silver bell.

"Clara, do not answer him," Arthur commanded, the sound of car doors slamming echoing faintly in the background as my father rushed across the venue parking lot. "Stay away from the door, and keep the line open so I can hear everything he says."

"Clara, seriously, stop playing games," Owen called out again, his tone shifting imperceptibly from warm affection to a sharp, impatient edge. The faint sound of rattling brass on the doorknob sent a jolt of pure adrenaline racing through my veins. He was trying the handle. Thank God I had instinctively locked the deadbolt the moment I rushed inside from the balcony.

"Owen, leave her alone," Evelyn’s sharp voice echoed from the hallway, cutting through the silence of the corridor. "She's probably having a last-minute panic attack. You know how dramatic her family is. Just use the master key card before the caterers start asking questions."

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. A master key card. They intended to barge in here, corner me, and finish whatever malicious gaslighting scheme they had meticulously crafted for months.

"I'm not playing games, Owen," I called out, my voice surprisingly steady as I forced myself to walk closer to the heavy door. I had to buy time. Every second I kept them talking in the hallway was another second closer to my father arriving with legal enforcement. "I just... I don't feel well. The dress is too tight. Give me a few minutes to breathe."

Silence fell outside the door for a tense moment. I imagined Owen and his mother exchanging glances, calculating their next move. Through the phone, I could hear the faint sound of my father barking orders at his driver to speed up.

"Clara, open this door right now or I swear I'm getting hotel security to break it down," Owen threatened, the thin veneer of his loving fiancé persona completely evaporating. The genuine venom in his voice was staggering, stripping away years of carefully constructed lies in a single breath. "You don't get to hide from this. We have a timeline to maintain."

"A timeline?" I shot back, gripping the phone so hard my knuckles turned ghostly white. "Is that what you call stealing my father's property and framing me for tax evasion? A timeline?"

On the other side of the oak door, a collective intake of breath signaled that my cover was completely blown. The illusion of ignorance was shattered. They knew I knew everything.

"Well, well, look who grew a spine," Evelyn sneered, her voice pressing directly against the wood of the door as she stepped up beside her son. "You were always entirely too naive for this family, Clara. You thought a pretty face and a fancy wedding would elevate your status permanently? You're nothing more than a signature on a deed."

"You're both going to prison," I whispered fiercely, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes and tracking hot paths down my cheeks.

"Not before the wire transfer clears at midnight," Owen laughed coldly, the sound of jingling metal keys scraping against the lock making my blood run completely cold.
