Chapter 7 - The Federal Shield

The heavy oak door didn't just open; it flew off its reinforced hinges, splintering into a dozen jagged pieces as federal marshals and hotel security flooded the bridal suite. My father, Arthur Sterling, charged into the room first, his face flushed with exhaustion and absolute fury, his eyes immediately locking onto me where Owen still had me pinned against the bathroom wall.
"Get your hands off my daughter!" my father roared, a sound so primal and terrifying that even the armed marshals stepped aside for a fraction of a second.
Owen recoiled as if he had been struck by lightning, releasing my wrists instantly and stumbling backward into the chrome fixtures of the bathroom. Evelyn stood frozen near the vanity, her manicured hands trembling as Marcus Vance—the federal prosecutor and senior partner my father had brought along—stepped smoothly into the room like an executioner stepping onto a scaffold.
I collapsed against the tiled wall, sliding down until I sat directly on the cold floor, clutching my bruised wrists to my chest. My heavy lace dress tangled around my knees, but I didn't care. The nightmare was finally colliding with reality.
"Owen Vance, you are under arrest for wire fraud, corporate identity theft, and extortion," Marcus Vance announced calmly, his deep voice cutting through the chaotic noise of the room with terrifying precision. Two federal marshals immediately stepped forward, grabbing Owen’s arms and forcing them behind his back with a sharp click of steel handcuffs.
"This is a mistake! We have legal documentation!" Owen protested wildly, thrashing against the marshals as they hauled him out of the bathroom and into the main suite. "My mother has the signed power of attorney! Clara signed it willingly!"
"Your forged power of attorney was flagged and invalidated twenty minutes ago by a federal magistrate judge," Marcus replied smoothly, not even blinking as Owen snarled at him.
Evelyn’s face turned the color of ash. She stumbled back against the vanity, her gold hoop earrings clinking softly against her neck as she tried to find a way toward the door. "I demand to speak to my counsel. This is an overreach. You have no jurisdiction—"
"Evelyn Vance, you're coming with us too," a second marshal interrupted, stepping smoothly into her path and clicking the second pair of handcuffs around her slender wrists. The maroon dress that had symbolized her triumph just minutes ago now looked like a costume of defeat.
My father rushed past the officers, dropping to his knees on the cold tile floor right beside me. His strong, steady hands cupped my face, his thumbs gently wiping away the tear tracks cutting through my bridal makeup.
"Are you alright, Clara? Did they hurt you?" my father asked, his voice cracking with a vulnerability I had never heard from the formidable trial lawyer before.
"I'm okay, Dad," I whispered, leaning into his warm touch as the adrenaline finally began to drain from my body, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion. "You got here just in time."
Owen was being dragged past the open doorway into the hallway, his face twisted in a mask of pure hatred as he glared back at me over the shoulder of a federal marshal.

"This isn't over, Clara!" Owen screamed, his voice echoing down the corridor. "The transfer to Zurich is already automatic! You'll never see a dime of that money back!"
