Chapter 4 - The Sound of Metal

The distinct metallic click of the master key card sliding into the electronic lock sounded like a gunshot in the quiet bridal suite. My breath caught in my throat. Without thinking, I lunged backward from the door, my heavy lace train tangling around my ankles and nearly sending me crashing to the floor.

"Clara, get away from the entrance!" my father shouted through the phone, his voice laced with absolute panic. "We are pulling up to the main portico right now. Hold them off for two more minutes, sweetheart. Just two more minutes!"

The green LED light on the door's smart lock flashed approvingly, followed immediately by the heavy mechanical clunk of the deadbolt retracting from the outside. Panic seized me. I spun around, my frantic eyes scanning the lavish room for any makeshift weapon or secondary exit. There was no balcony, no adjoining room—just the endless rows of polished mahogany furniture and the heavy drapes framing the tall windows.

The door swung inward with a smooth, silent motion.

Owen stepped across the threshold first, his tailored tuxedo impeccably pressed, but his face twisted into an ugly mask of cold irritation. Behind him, Evelyn glided into the room like a predatory bird, her maroon dress rustling softly against the floorboards as her sharp eyes immediately locked onto mine.

"You really shouldn't have listened in, Clara," Owen sighed, shaking his head with faux disappointment as he stepped further into the room and closed the heavy door behind them. "It's such an ungraceful look for a bride. So dramatic, so unnecessarily complicated."

I kept the phone pressed tightly against my ear, praying that my father could hear every single word echoing through the speaker. I backed away until the edge of the mahogany vanity pressed sharply against my lower back, trapping me between the heavy furniture and the two smiling monsters I had almost married.

"You're insane," I breathed, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to sound defiant. "How long has this been going on? The entire relationship—was it all just a setup to get your hands on my father's real estate portfolio?"

Evelyn chuckled softly, stepping past her son and running a manicured hand over the edge of the glass tabletop. "Oh, darling, please. Owen has loved many things in his life, but cash has always been his favorite mistress. You were simply the most efficient vehicle to acquire it. Your father's firm made millions protecting corporate criminals; it’s only poetic justice that a tiny fraction of it finds its way into our accounts."

"The police are already on their way," I lied smoothly, lifting my chin as I stared directly into Owen’s cold, calculating eyes. "My father knows about the Savannah condo, and he knows about the forged wire transfers."

Owen’s expression tightened for a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine uncertainty crossing his features before he quickly masked it with an arrogant smirk. He reached into his jacket pocket, his movements slow and deliberate, and pulled out his own smartphone.

"Your father can't do a damn thing, Clara, because legally, you signed over the power of attorney three days ago," Owen said calmly, tapping a button on his screen. "And right now, the final document is being countersigned by a judge who owes my mother a very large favor."

The phone in my hand suddenly beeped loudly, signaling an incoming text alert from an unknown number. My eyes dropped to the screen involuntarily, reading the horrifying message displayed across the glowing display: Your father’s law firm accounts have just been frozen.
