Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Mirror

The dial tone hummed in my ear like an angry hornet, a sharp contrast to the terrifying silence that had suddenly filled the grand bridal suite. My father picked up on the second ring, his voice warm, deep, and entirely unsuspecting of the nightmare that had just swallowed his only daughter whole.

"Clara, sweetheart?" my father, Arthur Sterling, answered, a slight chuckle of anticipation in his tone. "Shouldn't you be walking down the aisle right about now? The guests are getting restless out here in the garden, and your mother is already crying."

Hearing my father's voice broke something fragile deep inside my chest. A choked sob escaped my lips, but I clamped my hand tightly over my mouth, terrified that Evelyn Vance might still be lingering just outside the open bathroom door.

"Dad, listen to me," I whispered fiercely, my voice trembling so violently I could barely form the words. "The wedding is over. It's all a lie. Owen and his mother... they're working together to destroy me."

On the other end of the line, the warm, jovial tone vanished instantly, replaced by the sharp, protective instincts of a seasoned trial lawyer. Arthur Sterling did not waste time with comforting platitudes or confused questions; he shifted immediately into crisis mode.

"Clara, take a deep breath and tell me exactly where you are," my father commanded, his voice dropping into that cold, authoritative register he reserved for federal indictments. "Are you physically safe? Do I need to send security up to the suite right now?"

"I'm in the bridal suite," I replied, my eyes darting nervously toward the reflection in the vanity mirror. "Evelyn... she thinks I'm still hiding, but I overheard her talking to Owen. They planned the whole thing. The Savannah condo, the prenuptial clauses, everything—it was a coordinated scheme to strip me of my inheritance and pin financial fraud on my name."

A heavy, menacing silence stretched across the phone line for several agonizing seconds. I could hear the faint murmur of wedding guests laughing in the distance, completely oblivious to the fact that a financial execution had just taken place upstairs.

"Fraud?" my father repeated, the single word carrying the weight of a falling anvil. "Clara, explain the condo situation to me right now. Give me every detail you heard."

I quickly recounted Evelyn's chilling confession about the Savannah property, my hands shaking so badly I nearly dropped my phone onto the polished wooden floor. I told him about the burner text, the trap under the bed, and the cold betrayal dripping from my mother-in-law's lips.

"They used my signature," I realized with sudden, sickening horror, the pieces finally snapping together in my mind. "They had me sign the deed transfer documents during the rehearsal dinner last week under the guise of marriage license paperwork."

"Clever, vicious, and completely illegal," Arthur murmured coldly. "Listen to me very carefully, Clara. Do not leave that room. Do not speak to Owen, do not speak to Evelyn, and do not let anyone in. I am calling Marcus Vance, our firm's senior partner, and we are coming up there right now with the police."

I let out a shaky breath, feeling a tiny sliver of strength return to my spine. "Hurry, Dad. I don't know how much time we have before they realize I heard everything."

Before my father could answer, a loud, heavy knock echoed violently against the heavy oak door of the bridal suite, followed immediately by Owen's smooth, anxious voice calling my name from the hallway.
