Chapter 8: An Unexpected Ally

The digital clock on the nursery nightstand glowed 3:14 AM. The house was dead silent, save for the faint hum of the central air conditioning. Clara sat motionless in the rocking chair, her thoughts turning over every detail of the documents she had seen in the safe. If Julian had leverage over her through Thomas, then she needed leverage that could bypass Julian entirely. She needed to reach Arthur Pendelton, the former zoning board chairman whose photos were neatly filed in the red-stringed folder.
A soft tap at the adjoining bedroom door broke the stillness.
Clara froze, her heart skipping a beat. She stood up slowly, tiptoed across the carpet, and pressed her ear against the wood.
"Mrs. Vance?" a low, gravelly voice whispered from the master bedroom side. "Are you awake?"
Clara recognized the voice instantly. It belonged to Marcus Vance—no relation to Julian, despite the shared name—the head of household security who had worked for the estate for nearly a decade. Marcus was the man Julian had ordered to clean up the hallway earlier that evening, but Marcus had always treated Lily with a quiet, genuine kindness that Julian’s social circle entirely lacked.
Clara turned the key in the connecting door and cracked it open an inch. Marcus stood in the dim light of the master bedroom, holding a small manila envelope in his calloused hand. His expression was grave, his eyes carrying the heavy exhaustion of a man who had seen too much and said too little for far too long.
"What is it, Marcus?" Clara whispered, keeping her voice low so as not to disturb Lily.
Marcus held out the envelope. "I saw you go into the study earlier, Mrs. Vance. After Mr. Vance went back downstairs to take his private calls. You missed one folder. It fell behind the file cabinet when you shoved the others back into the safe."
Clara stared at the envelope, her hand trembling slightly as she took it from him. "You saw me?"
"I've seen a lot of things in this house over the years," Marcus said quietly, shifting his weight. "Mr. Vance isn't the man people think he is. Pendelton wasn't just taking bribes; he was trying to blow the whistle on the foundation's land acquisition schemes before they bulldozed the community center on 4th Street. Mr. Vance didn't just pay him off—he silenced him permanently."

Clara’s breath hitched. "Permanently?"
"Pendelton had a heart attack last week," Marcus said, his eyes meeting hers directly. "At least, that's what the death certificate says. But I was the one who drove Mr. Vance to Pendelton’s house the night before he died. And I know what was in the trunk of the car."
