Chapter 11: The Escape Through the Service Gates

The cool night air hit Clara’s face like a dash of cold water as she stepped out into the shadows of the service courtyard. Rain had begun to spit from the heavy autumn sky, slicking the asphalt with glistening pools of light from the overhead security lamps. Parked near the recycling bins was a nondescript white delivery van, its engine idling with a low, rhythmic hum.
The side door of the van slid open smoothly, revealing the weathered face of Marcus’s trusted contact, a retired mechanic named Hank whom Clara had occasionally seen working on the estate’s fleet.
"Get in, quick," Hank muttered, extending a calloused hand to help Clara and Lily up into the sparse, utilitarian interior of the van.
Clara scrambled inside, pulling Lily close to her chest. She settled onto a metal bench bolted to the side wall, clutching the duffel bag and the manila envelope Marcus had given her like a lifeline. Hank didn't waste a second; he slammed the side door shut, vaulted into the driver's seat, and shifted the van into drive.
As the van rolled slowly toward the security gates, Clara peered out the small side window. Up on the second-floor balcony of the mansion, a figure had stepped out into the rain. Julian stood in his shirtsleeves, staring down at the service courtyard with an expression of cold, unmitigated fury. He wasn't shouting now; his posture was rigid, his hands gripping the wrought-iron railing so hard his knuckles showed white against the dark night.
Julian’s eyes locked onto the white delivery van just as the automated security gates swung open. He raised a hand, pointing directly at them, shouting something lost beneath the roar of the engine.
"Hold on," Hank warned, pressing his foot down hard on the accelerator. The van surged forward, tearing through the gates and leaving the brightly lit, luxurious facade of the Vance estate behind them in the dark.
Clara closed her eyes for a brief second, exhaling a breath she felt she had been holding for five years. They were out. The physical prison was behind them. But she knew Julian too well to believe he would let them disappear quietly. He possessed resources, connections in local law enforcement, and a desperate need to protect his empire of lies.

"Are we safe, Mommy?" Lily murmured sleepily, her small hand reaching out to touch Clara’s cheek.
"We're going to be, sweetie," Clara whispered, kissing her daughter’s knuckles, ignoring the sting of the bandage on her forehead. "We're finally going home."
