Chapter 14: The Final Confrontation in the Press Room

Before Clara could grab Lily and head for the service exit, the heavy glass doors at the end of the fourth-floor newsroom pushed open with a sharp click.

Julian stood in the doorway. He had discarded his tuxedo jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up, his tie slightly loosened, but his posture radiated cold, calculating authority. Two private security guards flanked him, blocking the exit. The bustling newsroom instantly went dead silent. Reporters froze over their keyboards, sensing the sudden drop in atmospheric pressure.

Julian’s eyes swept the room, ignoring the staring journalists, until they landed squarely on Clara standing beside Sarah Jenkins' desk.

"Clara," Julian said, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet floor. He began walking toward her with slow, deliberate strides, his leather shoes clicking against the linoleum. "This has gone far enough. You're exhausted. Lily needs her bed. Come home."

"I am never coming back to that house, Julian," Clara said, stepping in front of the chair where Lily still slept. She raised her chin, her voice ringing out without a trace of fear. "Everyone here knows who you are. The documents are already being uploaded to the main server."

Julian stopped ten feet away from her. The polite mask had completely dissolved, leaving only the desperate, predatory rage of a cornered animal. "You think a few stolen papers and a disgruntled reporter can destroy what I’ve built? I own this city, Clara. I own the courts, the banks, and the men who write the laws."

"You don't own us anymore," Clara countered sharply.

Julian took another step forward, his hand slipping toward his jacket pocket where the spare keys—and something heavier—were concealed. But before he could reach it, the heavy metal elevator doors behind him chimed loudly.

Two federal marshals in tactical vests stepped out into the newsroom, their badges gleaming under the fluorescent lights. Behind them walked Marcus Vance, flanked by city detectives.

"Julian Vance," the lead marshal called out, his hand resting calmly on his service weapon. "You're under arrest for securities fraud, corporate embezzlement, and the homicide of Arthur Pendelton."

Julian froze. He turned his head slowly, looking at Marcus, then back to the federal agents. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving his features gray and hollow. The empire built on glass and deception had finally shattered completely.
