Chapter 10: Shadows in the Hallway

Clara moved through the nursery with swift, silent efficiency. She grabbed a small canvas duffel bag from the closet, tossing in a few changes of clothes for Lily, her favorite stuffed rabbit, and essential medical supplies for the cut on her forehead. She dressed Lily quickly, the little girl waking only enough to murmur sleepily before resting her head against Clara’s shoulder once more.

With the duffel slung over one shoulder and Lily cradled securely in her arms, Clara stepped out of the nursery into the master suite. The house was quiet, but the air felt charged, heavy with impending danger.

As she reached the door to the master bedroom, the floorboards outside in the main second-floor hallway creaked.

Clara froze. The rhythmic, heavy tread of expensive leather shoes was unmistakable. Julian. He was returning from his study earlier than expected.

Marcus stepped out from the shadows near the walk-in closet, his expression hardening. He pressed a finger to his lips, signaling Clara to stay back. He drew a small, suppressed handgun from his holster with practiced smoothness—a weapon Clara had never seen him carry during public events.

"Go through the service stairwell behind the laundry room," Marcus whispered fiercely, his eyes fixed on the locked master door. "I’ll buy you two minutes. If he asks, tell him I found an intruder on the perimeter."

"Marcus, I won't let you take the fall for this," Clara whispered back, panic threatening to break her composure.

"I’m not taking the fall, Mrs. Vance. I’m settling a score," Marcus said grimly. "Now go. Run."

Clara didn't hesitate. She slipped through the connecting door into the laundry service corridor, her soft-soled shoes silent against the tile. Behind her, she heard the heavy brass doorknob of the master suite rattle violently as Julian tried to enter.

"Marcus! What are you doing in my bedroom?" Julian’s voice boomed through the wood, sharp with sudden suspicion.

"Checking the window latches, Mr. Vance. Security protocol after the gala incident," Marcus’s voice rang out, steady and unyielding.

Clara rushed down the narrow, metal service stairs that spiraled down into the dark bowels of the estate. The air smelled of industrial detergent and damp concrete. Every step felt agonizingly loud, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She kept one arm locked securely around Lily, who stirred slightly in her sleep but did not cry out.

At the bottom of the stairs lay the heavy metal fire exit that led directly to the service courtyard where the delivery van waited. Clara pushed against the crash bar with her hip. The heavy door swung outward, admitting a rush of cool, damp night air.
