Chapter 15: Dawn Over the City

The morning sun broke over the eastern skyline, casting a warm, golden glow across the gray pavement of the federal plaza. The chaotic newsroom drama of the early morning hours had given way to the quiet, steady rhythm of a new beginning.
Clara walked down the wide stone steps of the federal building, holding Lily securely by the hand. The little girl skipped slightly, clutching her stuffed rabbit in her free arm, her forehead bandaged but her eyes bright and free of fear. Behind them, federal agents escorted a handcuffed Julian Vance toward an unmarked transport vehicle, his head bowed, the pristine black tuxedo now just a symbol of a fallen facade.
At the bottom of the steps waited Marcus Vance and Sarah Jenkins, holding a fresh copy of the City Chronicle. Across the front page, in bold black lettering, read the headline: FOUNDATION FRAUD EXPOSED: VANCE EMPIRE CRUMBLES UNDER WEIGHT OF CORRUPTION.
Sarah stepped forward, handing the newspaper to Clara with a respectful nod. "It's all out there, Clara. The investigation is national now. Your brother's name has been officially cleared of all prior charges; the legal team filed the exoneration motions an hour ago."
Clara looked down at the newspaper, then out at the wide, open street stretching out before them. The heavy crystal chandeliers and polished marble hallways of the estate felt like a lifetime away. She was no longer an ornament in someone else’s grand design; she was the architect of her own survival.
She knelt down to Lily’s eye level, brushing a stray curl from the child's cheek. "How do you feel, sweetie?"

Lily smiled brightly, her small face free of the heavy shadows that had haunted their home for years. "I'm hungry, Mommy. Can we get pancakes?"
Clara laughed—a real, light, musical laugh that echoed clearly in the crisp morning air. She stood up, taking Lily's hand once more, and walked forward into the warm sunlight, leaving the broken glass and shattered frames far behind them for good.
