Chapter 5: The Velvet Threat**

One rainy Tuesday afternoon, a sharp knock rattled the apartment door. Clara opened it to find Richard Sterling standing in the hallway, his designer trench coat dripping onto the welcome mat, flanked by two junior attorneys carrying briefcases.
“Mrs. Ashford,” Sterling said with practiced, clinical courtesy. “May we come in?”
Clara blocked the doorway, her posture tall, her voice calm. “My husband isn’t home, Mr. Sterling. Say whatever you have to say from the hall.”
Sterling opened a leather folder, extracting a thick legal contract. “Madam Ashford wishes to put an end to this embarrassing spectacle. She has authorized a one-time irrevocable settlement: ten million dollars in tax-free municipal bonds, a deed to a brownstone in Boston, and full tuition coverage for your education.”
Clara looked at the document, then back into Sterling’s emotionless eyes. “And the catch?”
“You will sign full, sole legal and physical custody of Leo over to Victoria Ashford. You will agree to a permanent nondisclosure agreement and relocate outside the state of New York within thirty days.”
Clara didn’t hesitate. She took the contract from Sterling’s manicured fingers, gripped it firmly at the top, and tore it in half with a crisp, violent rip. She tore it again, letting the confetti of legal jargon flutter down onto Sterling’s polished shoes.

“Tell Victoria that my son’s soul is not traded on her stock exchange,” Clara said, her voice trembling not with fear, but with absolute resolve. “Now get out before I call building security.”
