Chapter 12: The Cold White Room**

The coronary care unit at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was sterile and silent, save for the rhythmic, mechanical beeping of the cardiac monitor.
Victoria Ashford lay propped up in a standard hospital bed. Stripped of her makeup, her styled silver hair spread thin across the pillow, and wearing a faded blue hospital gown, she looked fragile, old, and completely defenseless. Her heart had suffered a severe stress-induced spasm—a literal broken heart brought on by isolation and panic.
The door creaked open. Victoria turned her head slowly, expecting another indifferent nurse.
Instead, Julian walked in, carrying one-year-old Leo, followed closely by Clara.
Victoria’s breath caught in her throat. She tried to sit up, her hands clutching the thin hospital blanket as if to hide her vulnerability. “Julian… Clara… what are you doing here? Did you come to gloat over what Arthur gave you?”
Julian didn't answer with anger. He pulled up a plastic chair beside the bed, sat down, and placed his warm hand over Victoria’s cold, paper-thin fingers.
“We didn't come for the company, Mother,” Julian said softly, his voice thick with emotion. “We came because you’re my mother. And because nobody should have to wake up alone in a place like this.”

Tears welled in Victoria’s sunken eyes, spilling over her wrinkled cheeks without the pride or defiance that had defined her entire existence.
