Chapter 8: The Path Ahead

Autumn arrived at the lake house. The leaves turned brilliant shades of amber, gold, and deep red, falling gracefully onto the calm water.

Sarah had begun painting again—a passion she had abandoned years ago to focus on her marriage and career. Sitting on the porch with her canvas, she painted the lake under the soft morning light. Art became her therapy, a way to process her grief and transform her heartbreak into something meaningful.

Glen visited every weekend. He respected the boundary Sarah had set, staying at a small bed-and-breakfast nearby. He spent his days with Toby—building birdhouses, fishing, and helping him with his schoolwork.

One Sunday afternoon, while Toby was inside doing a puzzle, Glen sat on the porch steps near Sarah.

""Your paintings are beautiful, Sarah,"" Glen said, staring at a landscape she had just finished. ""You haven't painted like this since college.""

""I lost myself for a long time, Glen,"" Sarah replied softly, putting down her brush. ""I spent years trying to make our life perfect, trying to hold everything together, that I stopped listening to what I actually needed.""

""I failed you,"" Glen said, looking down. ""In every way imaginable.""

""You did,"" Sarah said frankly. ""But I've realized something over these past few months. I don't hate you anymore, Glen. Hatred takes too much energy, and I want to spend my energy on being happy again.""

Glen looked up, hope flickering in his eyes. ""Does that mean... there's a chance for us?""

Sarah looked at him gently, but her decision was clear. ""No, Glen. Forgiveness doesn't mean starting over. It means letting go. We can't go back to who we were. But we can be good co-parents for Toby.""
