Chapter 7: The Removal

A month later, Clara sat in the cold, sterile room of a laser dermatology clinic. The smell of antiseptic filled the air.

Dr. Aris examined the fresh tattoo on her lower waist. ""It's still relatively new, Clara. The laser removal process will be painful, and it will take several sessions over six months to fully erase it. There might be permanent scarring.""

""I don't care about the pain,"" Clara said quietly, her voice steady. ""I want it gone. Every single trace of it.""

As the laser pulsed against her skin, firing hot beams of light to shatter the ink particles beneath, Clara squeezed her eyes shut. Physical pain was nothing compared to the emotional weight of her actions. She realized that trying to possess someone else's happiness had only destroyed her own.

During the painful procedure, she made a decision. She would leave the city. She would sell her apartment, resign from her job, and move back to her hometown to care for her aging mother. It was time to stop running from herself and start making amends.

When the session ended, her skin was bandaged and throbbing. She walked out into the afternoon light, feeling light-headed but strangely relieved. Erasing the tattoo wouldn't fix the damage she had caused, but it was the first step toward reclaiming her integrity.

She took out her phone and typed a final message to Sarah:

May you like

“Sarah, I am so sorry for the unbearable pain I brought into your life. I am getting the tattoo erased, and I am leaving the city for good. You don't have to forgive me, but I want you to know that I will spend the rest of my life trying to be a better human being. I pray that you, Glen, and Toby find peace.”

She hit send, deleted Sarah's number, and threw her phone onto the passenger seat.
