Chapter 13: The Bridge

It was Toby’s tenth birthday party—not a chaotic poolside event like the one two years ago, but an intimate, warm gathering at the lake house.
Glen arrived carrying a large wrapped box containing a brand-new mountain bike. Toby ran out to greet him, hugging him tightly.
""Happy birthday, big guy!"" Glen laughed, tossing his son into the air before setting him down.
David came out from the kitchen carrying a tray of homemade burgers. ""Hey, Glen! Good to see you. Glad you could make it early.""
""Thanks, David,"" Glen said, shaking David's hand warmly. Over the past year, Glen and David had formed a deep mutual respect. Glen appreciated how kind and respectful David was to Toby and Sarah, and David respected Glen’s role as Toby’s father.
Sarah walked out with a pitcher of fresh lemonade, handing a glass to Glen.
""Everything looks wonderful, Sarah,"" Glen said softly, taking a sip.

""Thanks to everyone helping out,"" Sarah smiled. She looked at Glen, then at David, and then at Toby, who was eagerly showing his friends his new bike.
There was no tension. No hidden resentment. The broken pieces of their past had been reassembled into a new kind of family structure—one held together not by marriage, but by maturity, love for a child, and unconditional respect.
