Chapter 12: The Unsent Letter

One evening, while cleaning out an old desk in the lake house, Sarah found a thick white envelope. It was the letter Clara had sent her two years ago, which Sarah had put away without reading.
She sat by the fireplace, the warm orange glow illuminating the paper, and finally opened it.
Dear Sarah,
I don't write this asking for your forgiveness, because I know some actions are unforgivable. I write this to take full responsibility. What happened at the pool was the result of my own deep brokenness and selfishness. I wanted what you had because I couldn't find peace in myself.
I have removed the tattoo. The skin is scarred, but every time I look at it, I am reminded of the damage unhealed envy can cause. I hope that one day, your heart finds peace, and that Toby grows up knowing how incredible his mother is.
With deepest remorse,
Clara.

Sarah read the letter twice. She folded it gently and placed it into the burning fireplace. She watched as the flames consumed the paper, turning the words to ash.
She didn't need to hold onto the hurt anymore. She didn't need revenge. She realized that true healing wasn't about forgetting the betrayal, but about reaching a place where the betrayal no longer had the power to define her happiness.
