Chapter 8: The Director's Logic

Director Vance did not raise his voice, nor did he signal the armed guards to raise their weapons. He simply stood in the center of the hallway, a picture of corporate detachment amidst the flashing red emergency lights. He looked at Elena with a patronizing calm that grated against her frayed nerves.
"You're destroying them, Vance, and for what?" Elena demanded, stepping forward despite the armed guards flanking him. "A data network? They are children, not components for a mainframe."
"They are the next evolutionary step in human operational efficiency," Vance replied evenly, his voice devoid of any emotional warmth. "For decades, human error has been the primary variable in deep-space exploration and industrial automation. By harmonizing cognitive processing across a dedicated cohort, we eliminate miscommunication, fatigue, and hesitation. What you call a tragedy, Doctor, is actually a breakthrough of monumental proportions."
"It's a lobotomy disguised as progress," Julian interjected, stepping up beside Elena and squaring his shoulders. "You're wiping their identities to build a living machine."
Vance sighed softly, a gesture of profound impatience. "Identity is an inefficient luxury, Julian. In the grand design of corporate logistics, individual ego is merely a source of friction. The children are contributing to something far greater than themselves."
Elena shook her head slowly, a quiet fury burning in her dark eyes. "They didn't consent. Their families were lied to, told they were attending a specialized academy for gifted youth."
"Consent is a construct of a bygone era," Vance countered dismissively. He gestured subtly to the two guards at his sides. "Detain them. Take Dr. Vance back to the lower holding block, and escort Julian to the processing wing. The morning transport is scheduled to depart in forty minutes, and I will not allow sentimentality to derail a multi-million-dollar initiative."
The guards stepped forward, heavy tactical boots clicking against the polished floor tiles. The one on the left reached out, his gloved hand moving to grab Elena’s arm.
Elena didn't flinch. Instead, she waited until the guard was within arm's reach, then moved with sudden, practiced precision. She dropped her weight, pivoted on her heel, and struck the inside of the guard’s elbow with the heel of her hand, deflecting his grip while simultaneously driving her shoulder into his chest. The guard staggered backward, gasping in surprise.

Before the second guard could raise his weapon, Julian lunged forward, tackling him into the smoked-glass partition with a loud crash. Shards of safety glass cascaded across the floor as the two men tumbled through the divider into an adjoining office.
"Move!" Elena yelled, grabbing Julian’s sleeve as he scrambled back to his feet. They bolted past the stunned director, sprinting toward the emergency stairwell that led up to the roof access tower.
