Chapter 10: The High-Voltage Gamble

Sparks crackled inside the open junction box as Julian exposed the thick copper busbars that fed power directly into the massive transmission array. The sharp smell of ozone filled the air, mixing with the damp scent of the incoming storm clouds gathering overhead. Julianβs hands were steady, though every muscle in his arms tensed against the biting cold and the immense pressure of the moment.
"Julian, wait!" Vance shouted, taking a half-step forward before stopping as Elena planted herself firmly in his path, her dark eyes flashing with unyielding resolve. "If you cut those lines without dumping the capacitance first, the feedback surge will hit the residential wing instantly. The children's minds are operating at peak resonance; they won't be able to handle the shock!"
Julian paused, a heavy wrench hovering inches away from the live terminals. He looked back over his shoulder, his face pale against the dark backdrop of the predawn sky. "Heβs right, Elena. If I cut it raw, the neurological backlash could fry their neural pathways permanently."
"Then we need to ground the circuit first," Elena said, her mind racing as she calculated the engineering specs of the array. She looked around the rooftop, her gaze landing on a heavy copper grounding cable snaking along the base of the parapet wall. "Julian, use the grounding cable! Tie it from the main busbar to the steel lightning rod on the parapet before you cut!"
Julian didn't hesitate. He grabbed the heavy, insulated copper cable, unscrewing the terminal clamp with a swift twist of his wrench. He dragged the thick wire across the concrete, looping it securely around the base of the towering lightning rod that rose ten feet into the air above the roofline.
Vance shook his head in disbelief, his composure finally fracturing into visible panic. "You're insane. You're going to overload the entire facility grid. The corporate board will bury you both for corporate sabotage and treason."
"Let them try," Elena replied evenly, never breaking eye contact with the director. "At least the children will have a future to defend."
Julian returned to the junction box, positioning the heavy insulated cutters around the primary positive busbar. He braced his feet against the concrete, took a slow, deep breath to steady his nerves, and squeezed the handles with all his strength.

A blinding flash of white light erupted from the junction box, accompanied by a deafening crack that sounded like a nearby lightning strike. The copper grounding cable hissed violently, glowing red-hot for a fraction of a second as it channeled thousands of volts of electrical energy straight up into the metal lightning rod, harmlessly discharging the excess power into the stormy atmosphere above.
The red warning lights on the communications tower flickered frantically once, twice, and then went completely dark. The low-frequency hum that had vibrated through the foundation of the facility for days ceased instantly, leaving behind an eerie, profound silence.
