Chapter 13: The Investigation

Three days after the blackout, the sterile corridors of the facility were filled with federal investigators, compliance inspectors, and independent journalists rather than corporate security guards. The takeover was systematic and absolute. Director Vance and the executive board members were detained pending formal indictments for unauthorized human experimentation, corporate fraud, and systematic suppression of medical safety data.

Elena sat at the large conference table on the seventh floor—the same room where she had confronted Vance just days prior. The air no longer smelled of ozone and corporate tension; instead, it smelled of fresh coffee and legal briefs as federal agents cataloged the remaining documentation from the facility's archives.

Julian walked into the boardroom carrying a thick stack of finalized medical clearances for the children. He placed them neatly on the glass tabletop in front of Elena, pulling out a chair and sitting down with a tired sigh.

"The last of the children were discharged to their families this morning," Julian said, a faint smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Social services arranged safe transit back to their hometowns, complete with independent psychological support teams to help them readjust."

Elena closed the folder she was reviewing, looking up at Julian with a deep sense of gratitude. "And the facility?"

"Scheduled for indefinite closure and federal seizure," Julian replied, leaning back in his chair. "The oversight committee is using this case to rewrite the entire regulatory framework governing autonomous cognitive research across the private sector. What we exposed here is going to change industry standards nationwide."

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom opened, and an independent federal investigator stepped inside, carrying a final clearance document for Elena’s signature. She took the pen, her hand steady and sure, and signed her name with a flourish that marked the definitive end of her chapter within the corporate compound.

As the investigator gathered the paperwork and departed, Elena stood up and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlooked the exterior courtyard. Below, the morning sun was breaking through the heavy gray storm clouds, casting a warm, golden light across the paved grounds where families were finally reunited with their children, laughing and crying in the open air.

Maya stood near the center of the courtyard, looking up at the high windows of the seventh floor. Even from a distance, Elena could see the little girl’s big eyes looking directly toward her. Maya raised a small hand, waving slowly and deliberately.

Elena raised her hand in response, a quiet, genuine smile gracing her features.
