Chapter 2: Shadows in the Hallway

The faint hum of the fluorescent overhead lights flickered, casting long, dancing shadows across the concrete floor of the cell block. Julian pulled his brown jacket tighter around his shoulders, his eyes darting toward the arched exit at the end of the corridor. The silence of the facility was heavy, broken only by the distant, rhythmic dripping of a leaky pipe somewhere deep within the lower foundation.
Maya pressed her forehead against the cold steel bars, her breath fogging the metal. "Is the bad noise coming back?" she asked, her voice barely audible above the hum of the electricity.
Elena knelt down inside the cell, ignoring the dampness seeping through the hem of her black dress. She brought her face level with Maya’s, keeping her movements slow and deliberate to calm the girl. "No, sweetie. Not if we are quiet," Elena said softly, smoothing a stray strand of hair away from Maya's forehead. But inside, her stomach churned with dread. She knew the noise the girl was talking about—a low-frequency hum that had begun echoing through the residential dormitories three nights ago, right before the children's behavior shifted.
Julian crouched down beside Maya, placing a comforting hand on her small shoulder. "Listen to me, Maya," he said, keeping his tone calm and reassuring. "I need you to go with Uncle Marcus to the upper courtyard. Wait by the fountain. I will meet you there very soon."
Maya shook her head stubbornly, her big eyes filling with sudden tears that she refused to let fall. "I want to stay with Mama."
"You have to go, baby," Elena urged gently, pressing her fingers through the bars to lightly touch Maya’s cheek. "If you stay here, the people with the clipboards will take you back to the white room. You remember the white room, don't you? Where they asked you all those questions until your head hurt?"
Maya shivered, the memory clearly terrifying her. She nodded slowly, stepping back from the cell door and clutching the strap of her small backpack.
Julian stood up, casting a cautious glance toward the arched hallway as heavy, booted footsteps began to echo from above. "Marcus is waiting by the maintenance stairwell," Julian whispered to Elena, his voice tight with urgency. "I told him to get her off the compound. The board authorized a full relocation of the subjects for tomorrow morning. That means they’re moving them to the deep subterranean labs."
Elena gripped the iron bars, her knuckles aching from the pressure. "And once they’re down there, nobody gets answers. The isolation is complete."
"I’m working on a way to open this lock," Julian said, tapping the heavy steel padlock with his knuckle. "It requires a biometric override from the station chief’s office. That means I have to go up there."

"It’s too dangerous, Julian. The security detail is doubled since my arrest," Elena warned, her eyes searching his face for any sign of hesitation.
Julian gave a faint, grim smile, his posture straightening as he prepared to face the risk. "Danger is relative when you realize what they’re trying to cover up."
