Chapter 7: The Seventh Floor

The service elevator chimed softly as it reached the seventh floor, the heavy doors parting to reveal an entirely different world from the damp concrete cells below. Here, the architecture was sleek and modern, defined by walls of brushed steel, smoked glass panels, and warm indirect lighting. But the tranquility of the executive suite was shattered; red emergency strobe lights flashed rhythmically against the glass walls, casting an urgent, bloody hue over the plush designer furniture.
Elena stepped out of the elevator first, her black dress slightly stained with rust and dust from her escape, her posture rigid and alert. Julian followed closely behind her, his hand resting reassuringly on the small tool kit tucked inside his brown jacket.
The central boardroom was located at the end of the long corridor, its double doors thrown wide open. From where they stood, Elena could see the empty leather chairs surrounding a massive conference table, scattered with discarded tablets, half-empty coffee cups, and open security dossiers.
"They were just here," Elena whispered, stepping cautiously into the boardroom. She walked over to the head of the table, picking up an illuminated tablet that lay face up on the glass surface. The screen displayed a live schematic of the facility’s communications array, with a flashing red icon indicating that the manual override sequence had been initiated from a terminal on the roof access level.
Julian joined her, looking over her shoulder at the display. "Vance must have realized the system was compromised. He’s heading to the roof to lock out the physical controls before we can reach them."
"If he locks out the manual override, we won't be able to sever the transmission tower," Elena said, her voice dropping into a cold, determined register. "The children will lose their minds to the network within the hour."
Suddenly, a sharp sound echoed from the far end of the suite—the distinct click of a security door unlatching, followed by measured, heavy footsteps approaching down the private corridor.
Elena and Julian exchanged a single, knowing look. There was no time to hide, and no alternative route forward. Elena stepped squarely into the center of the doorway, her head held high, ready to confront the man who had ordered the imprisonment of both her and the children.

Director Vance appeared around the corner, flanked by two armed security guards in full tactical gear. He stopped abruptly upon seeing Elena standing free of her cell, his pale face tightening into a scowl of cold irritation. He adjusted the cuffs of his expensive suit jacket, his dark eyes narrowing as he assessed the situation with chilling composure.
"Well, Dr. Vance," the director said smoothly, his voice carrying an icy authority. "It appears your security audit was somewhat premature."
