Chapter 9

The lead marshal lowered his document and looked directly at Julian, nodding with a quiet, respectful acknowledgment. "Mr. Vance. We secured the perimeter. The digital drives are syncing with our field unit now."
"Thank you, Agent Miller," Julian replied evenly. "My wife, my children, and I are leaving the property now. We have transportation waiting?"
"Standard protocol, sir. We’ll escort you to a secure location off-site until the initial hearings tomorrow morning," Agent Miller confirmed, gesturing toward the open doorway where the emergency vehicles hummed in the rain.
Clara looked back one last time at the grand double staircase, the crystal chandelier, and the cavernous rooms that had symbolized her gilded cage for ten long years. The opulence now looked hollow, devoid of warmth or genuine connection. She squeezed Leo’s small hand a little tighter. "Let's go home, boys," she whispered.
Julian led the way, his boots hitting the marble steps toward the open door, stepping out of the shadows of the mansion and into the cool, cleansing rain. Clara and the twins followed closely behind him, a unified family unit moving deliberately into the uncertain but liberated future. Behind them, the sounds of federal agents securing the estate and reading Richard his rights faded into the background, swallowed by the rising wind of the storm.
As they reached the tarmac of the circular drive, the biting cold air felt remarkably refreshing. Julian placed the heavy gym bag into the trunk of the waiting black sedan, then gently settled Maya into her specialized car seat in the back, ensuring she remained safely buckled and asleep. Clara helped the twins settle into the row beside her, her white dress catching a drop of rain before she pulled the door shut behind her.

Julian walked around to the driver's side, paused for a brief moment to look back at the grand estate illuminated against the dark sky, and then slid behind the wheel. He closed the door, shutting out the past entirely.
The engine purred to life, a quiet, steady hum of mechanical power ready to carry them far away from the wreckage they left behind.
