Chapter 6

The pronouncement hung in the air like an indictment. On the upper landing, the silent cousin—David, who handled the estate’s corporate filings—finally spoke up, his voice echoing nervously off the high vaulted ceiling. "You can't just take the heirs, Julian. There are custody arrangements, court orders, probate judges who won't look kindly on a kidnapping."

Julian didn't look up at David. "Let them try to issue an order," Julian replied calmly. "Every document granting guardianship to the estate was signed under economic duress and coercion. I have the audio recordings from Richard’s office, saved on an encrypted drive currently uploading to three independent federal prosecutors. By sunrise, the probate court won't even exist."

Richard’s face drained of what little color remained. "You wouldn't," he whispered, the bravado completely evaporating from his posture. "You'd destroy the family name just to spite us?"

"I'm not doing this out of spite, Richard. I'm doing this for survival," Julian said. He looked back at Clara, who stood paralyzed between her husband and her family heritage. "You have thirty seconds to decide which side of this foyer you belong on, Clara. With the ghosts of the Blackwood empire, or with your children."

Clara looked at her brother, whose eyes pleaded with her not to break ranks, not to expose decades of carefully guarded secrets to the outside world. Then she looked down at Leo and Toby, who were watching her with a desperate, heartbreaking hope. Finally, her eyes settled on Julian and the sleeping baby in his arms. The choice, which had seemed impossible just moments ago, suddenly crystallized with terrifying simplicity.

"Clara, don't be a fool," Richard hissed, stepping closer and reaching out to grab her wrist. "If you walk out those doors with him, you lose everything. The trusts, the properties, the allowance—you'll be penniless."

Clara pulled her arm away from Richard’s grasp with a sharp, decisive jerk. The movement was small, but the symbolic weight of it shook the foundation of the room. She turned her back on her brother, leaving him standing alone on the polished marble floor.

"I was already penniless, Richard," Clara said, her voice steady and clear as she walked toward Julian. "I just didn't realize it until tonight."
