Chapter 8

Before anyone on the staircase could make another move to intervene, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from the front entryway. The heavy double doors, which Julian had closed and latched upon entry, rattled violently. A muffled voice called out from the freezing rain outside, followed by the heavy thud of a shoulder hitting the reinforced wood.

Richard’s head snapped toward the door, a sudden spark of hope igniting in his eyes. "That’s private security. They cleared the gate override."

Julian didn't flinch. He adjusted Maya in his arm, ensuring the baby remained deeply asleep despite the commotion. "They didn't clear anything," Julian said, his voice completely calm. "That’s federal marshals, Richard. I filed the emergency protective custody paperwork before I walked through those gates. They’re here to secure the premises and impound the financial servers."

The heavy oak doors shuddered again, and this time, the latch gave way with a resounding crack. The doors swung wide open, letting in a bitter gust of winter wind and rain that swirled across the imported marble floor. Silhouetted against the flashing blue and red lights of unmarked vehicles parked in the circular drive stood three figures in dark tactical rain gear, badges gleaming under the foyer lights.

"Federal agents! Stay where you are!" the lead marshal commanded, his voice authoritative and commanding absolute compliance.

Richard staggered back, his hands rising defensively. "There’s been a mistake! This is a private residence! We’re cooperating with—"

"Mr. Richard Blackwood?" the marshal interrupted, stepping across the threshold and holding out a folded document. "You’re being served with a federal injunction for corporate fraud, asset stripping, and obstruction of justice. Step away from the stairs."

The atmosphere in the grand foyer shifted in an instant. The aristocratic illusion of the Blackwood estate—built on decades of untouchable wealth and inherited privilege—shattered completely under the cold light of accountability. The silent cousin on the upper landing slowly raised his hands, while the stern aunt retreated backward into the shadows of the hallway.

Julian stood his ground near the open door, the cold wind whipping at the edges of his black suit jacket. He looked like a man who had weathered the storm and finally reached the other side. Clara stood beside him, one hand resting protectively on Toby’s shoulder, her posture straight and resolute.
