Chapter 3

Julian let the heavy leather gym bag slide from his shoulder, letting it drop to the marble floor with a dull, heavy thud. The sound reverberated through the grand foyer, drawing the nervous attention of the adults still lingering on the staircase above. Richard took another step down, his hand sliding instinctively toward the inner pocket of his tailored blazer, but Julian’s unwavering stare froze him in his tracks.

"Don't reach for anything, Richard," Julian said without raising his voice. "Unless you want everyone in this room to see what’s actually inside that bag."

Clara looked down at the scuffed leather container resting between them. The contrast between the bag and the pristine white marble was jarring. "What is that?" she asked, her voice dropping to a cautious whisper. "What have you brought into this house, Julian?"

"Proof," Julian replied simply. He didn't open the bag yet. He knew that the anticipation of truth was often more terrifying than the truth itself. "Every ledger, every offshore transfer, every piece of correspondence connecting your brother and his associates to the liquidation of our assets—and the deliberate staging of my disappearance. It’s all in there, neatly cataloged."

On the stairs, Richard’s face flushed a mottled red. "He’s bluffing," Richard barked, though a tremor in his baritone betrayed his anxiety. "The man's been living out of a sedan for a month. He’s delusional, Clara. He couldn't possibly have accessed the primary servers."

"I was a forensic accountant before your family bought me out, Richard," Julian reminded him, his tone glacial. "I wrote the security protocols for this very estate. Bypassing your firewall was easier than convincing the bank to freeze your personal accounts—which, by the way, happened twenty minutes ago."

Clara turned her head sharply toward her brother, the shock on her face giving way to cold realization. "You said the restructuring was legal, Richard. You swore nobody would lose their livelihoods, let alone—"

"Shut up, Clara!" Richard snapped, losing his veneer of sophisticated calm. He lunged down the remaining steps, pushing past his younger sister with an impatient shove. "Can't you see he's playing you? He's trying to tear us apart because he couldn't stomach losing his status!"

Before Richard could close the distance, Julian shifted the sleeping baby to one arm and brought his free hand up, pointing a single, definitive finger at his brother-in-law. The quiet authority in Julian’s posture stopped Richard dead in his tracks, mere feet away from the gym bag.
