Chapter 9: Fire at the Threshold

The orange glow of the thermal torch danced across the damp concrete walls as the cutting flame carved a fiery circle into the center of the heavy iron door. Sparks showered onto the floor in a dazzling cascade of white-hot metal.
“Eighty percent!” Marcus announced, his voice tight with urgency as his fingers danced furiously across the keyboard. “Hold them off for forty seconds, El!”
Elena didn't hesitate. She grabbed the heavy steel desk chair, sliding it wedge-style beneath the door handle to buy whatever precious fractions of a second she could. She drew her knife from her belt, the steel gleaming dully in the green light of the computer terminal. Her breathing was deep, controlled, and perfectly steady, matching the rhythm of a hunter waiting in the brush.
Julian backed away from the door, his hand instinctively reaching into his suit jacket as if looking for a weapon he didn't possess. “How did they find us so fast? This subnet was supposed to be completely dark!”
“There’s no such thing as a dark subnet when a multi-trillion-dollar cartel owns the satellite infrastructure,” Marcus said, his eyes glued to the progress bar. “Ninety percent! Almost there…”
With a deafening crash, the center of the iron door kicked inward. A heavy combat boot smashed through the freshly cut hole, followed by the barrel of a suppressed assault rifle. Elena lunged forward with blinding speed. She drove the hilt of her knife downward with brutal force against the exposed wrist of the operative holding the weapon. A sharp cry of pain echoed from the other side, and the rifle clattered uselessly onto the concrete floor.
The operative tried to retract his arm, but Elena grabbed the sleeve of his tactical jacket, using his own momentum to slam his face hard against the jagged edge of the metal opening. The man slumped backward, unconscious.
“Ninety-five percent!” Marcus shouted over the din of external alarms beginning to wail from the ceiling speakers.
“We’ve got company coming down the drainage pipe behind us!” Elena called out, her ears catching the unmistakable scrape of tactical boots echoing from the northern end of the tunnel network.
Marcus slammed his fist down on the Enter key. “Upload complete! The files are live on every major news network and regulatory database globally. It’s out of our hands now.”

Julian let out a ragged breath of pure relief, collapsing against the steel desk as the reality of what they had achieved finally washed over him. But there was no time to celebrate. The cutting torch outside flared again as a second operative stepped up to finish burning through the deadbolt, while behind them, the dark mouth of the drainage tunnel flickered with the green beams of approaching weapon sights.
