Chapter 13: Checkmate in the Server Room

Arthur Sterling adjusted the cuffs of his pristine white shirt, his expression as calm and unreadable as if he were presiding over a routine quarterly earnings meeting. The silenced pistol in his hand didn't tremble by a single millimeter.

“You’re finished, Arthur,” Julian said, stepping out from the vault threshold to shield Elena and Marcus. “The global press consortium has the entire offshore ledger. Federal marshals are already securing the upper floors.”

Sterling let out a soft, dry chuckle that held no humor whatsoever. “Federal marshals, Mr. Vance? My lawyers bought those marshals before you finished your appetizers tonight. By morning, that data leak will be successfully branded as a sophisticated cyber-attack by a foreign hostile actor, and my board will receive a government bailout to restructure. The system doesn't fall just because a few spreadsheets get published.”

Elena slowly stepped out from behind Julian, her eyes locked onto Sterling’s finger resting on the pistol’s trigger. Her face was still marked with the dried blood from the restaurant, her white button-down shirt stained and torn, but her posture radiated a terrifying, coiled power.

“You forgot one detail, Mr. Sterling,” Elena said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, rhythmic register.

Sterling glanced at her with mild, condescending curiosity. “And what might that be, my dear? A disgruntled waitress with a wooden club?”

“You left the physical drives unencrypted,” Elena said softly.

Before Sterling could process her words, Marcus lunged from the doorway, throwing a heavy industrial EMP generator onto the floor between the server racks and activating the toggle switch with his boot.

A blinding flash of electric-blue light filled the server room accompanied by a sharp, high-frequency whine. Every single server rack flickered violently, their status lights turning from green to dead, pitch black in a fraction of a second. The cooling fans wound down with a mournful sigh as the entire subterranean facility’s electrical grid fried instantly under the localized electromagnetic pulse.

Sterling cursed loudly as his pistol’s electronic safety lock jammed instantly. He fired blindly into the dark, but Elena was already moving. In two swift strides, she closed the distance, sweeping her arm upward to knock the useless weapon from his grip and driving the palm of her hand hard against his chest. Sterling stumbled backward, crashing heavily against a stack of steel archive boxes and sliding unconscious to the floor.

The server room was plunged into absolute, echoing silence, illuminated only by the faint red emergency backup lights glowing along the floorboards.

Julian exhaled a breath he felt like he had been holding for hours, his hands steadying as he looked down at the unconscious CEO. “It’s over,” he whispered. “The physical backups are completely fried. The data can never be recovered or altered.”
