Chapter 6: The Weight of the Ledger

Marcus lowered his pistol by a fraction of an inch, his critical gaze sweeping over Julian with reluctant appraisal. “You’ve got a lot of nerve bringing that case straight to the people who shoot first and ask questions later, Mr. Vance.”

Julian squared his shoulders, trying to reclaim some semblance of corporate dignity despite the grime and blood staining his clothes. “I watched you two move in that restaurant. I’m not an idiot. I know who—and what—Elena really is, even if she’s spent years pretending to pour wine for tourists. My corporate security team was compromised within ten minutes of downloading these files. You’re the only ones who aren't on their payroll.”

Elena crossed her arms over her chest, feeling the tight pull of the wound on her forehead. The pragmatic part of her mind screamed that involving themselves with Julian’s corporate crusade was suicide. Yet, looking at the heavy leather briefcase, she knew Marcus was right about one thing: the syndicate would hunt them down regardless of whether they helped Julian or not. Their names were already whispered over encrypted channels across the city.

“If we take that case,” Elena said slowly, her voice laced with iron, “we play by my rules. No hesitation, no second guesses, and you do exactly what we say, when we say it.”

Julian didn't hesitate for a single second. “Agreed.”

Marcus sighed, running a hand through his graying hair before sliding his pistol back into his coat holster. “All right. But we can’t stay in this alley. The neighborhood’s crawling with corporate cleanup crews disguised as municipal workers. We need a secure uplink to decrypt those files and broadcast them before they scrub the servers.”

“My old safehouse,” Elena said, her eyes narrowing as she calculated the safest route through the city’s labyrinthine subway maintenance tunnels. “It’s three miles north, beneath the old rail yards. If the locks haven't been tripped by city inspectors, it’s airtight.”

As the trio began moving deeper into the shadows of the alley toward the rusted access hatch leading down into the subterranean network, the distant wail of sirens began to fade, replaced by an eerie, unnatural quiet. The city above them slept on, completely unaware that a quiet war between corporate corruption and forgotten operatives had just spilled onto its rain-slicked streets. Elena led the way with silent, fluid grace, her hand resting naturally on a concealed knife tucked into her belt, every sense dialed to maximum alert as they descended into the dark underworld.
