Chapter 10: The Subterranean Breach

The air in the bunker grew instantly hotter as the second cutting torch sliced clean through the remaining steel of the reinforced door. With a heavy, metallic groan, the entire iron panel fell inward, crashing onto the concrete floor and kicking up a thick cloud of gray dust. Through the smoke, two figures in matte-black tactical gear and full-face respirators stepped into the room, their weapons raised in synchronized precision.
Elena didn't give them a chance to acquire targets. Dropping low, she swept her leg in a vicious arc, catching the lead operative behind the knee and sending him crashing hard onto his back. Before the second operative could pivot his rifle toward her, Marcus fired a single, suppressed round from his trench coat, striking the wall inches from the man’s helmet and forcing him to dive for cover behind the steel doorframe.
“Move! Now!” Marcus yelled, grabbing Julian by the shoulder and hauling him toward the rear drainage exit before the second wave could recover.
Elena scrambled backward, keeping her knife raised as she covered their retreat. The operative on the floor lunged for her ankles, but she brought her heel down hard on his instep, breaking his grip with a sickening pop. She didn't look back as she sprinted into the dark, echoing expanse of the drainage tunnel, following the faint glow of Marcus’s tactical flashlight ahead.
The tunnels stretched out in a labyrinthine grid beneath the city streets, the sound of their running footsteps splashing loudly against the shallow runoff water pooling on the concrete floor. Behind them, muffled shouts and the heavy tramp of tactical boots signaled that the pursuit was closing the distance rapidly.
“Where does this lead?” Julian gasped, his lungs burning as he struggled to keep pace with Marcus and Elena through the uneven terrain.
“Old subway maintenance shaft,” Elena called back over her shoulder, her voice steady despite the intense physical exertion. “If we can reach the junction box before they cut off the ventilation sector, there’s an emergency ladder that leads straight up into the financial district.”
“The financial district?” Julian coughed, stumbling slightly before Marcus caught his arm and hauled him upward. “That’s right underneath Vanguard Global Logistics’ corporate headquarters!”
“Exactly,” Marcus said grimly. “They won’t expect us to walk straight into the lion’s den after leaking their files. It’s the only place they won’t bomb with a drone strike while the data is still trending.”
They rounded a sharp concrete corner, the tunnel opening up into a massive underground junction where three different drainage pipes converged beneath a rusted iron catwalk. Elena immediately climbed the rusted metal stairs leading to the upper maintenance ledge, motioning for Julian and Marcus to follow.

As Julian reached the top of the platform, a bright beam of white light cut through the darkness behind them. A tactical drone, no larger than a dinner plate, hovered silently around the corner of the tunnel, its high-definition camera locking directly onto their position with a low, electronic whir.
