Chapter 3: Shadows of the Past

The voice from the alley was sharp, clipped, and spoke in a rapid cadence of military-grade code. Elena recognized it instantly. It belonged to Marcus, a ghost from the life she had systematically dismantled and buried beneath five years of aprons, tip trays, and polite smiles. The realization sent a cold shiver down her spine that had nothing to do with the night air rushing through the broken windows.

Beneath the velvet booth, Julian pulled his mother closer, shielding her ears as the sound of sirens grew louder, their red and blue strobes painting the restaurant walls in rhythmic, dizzying flashes. He watched Elena with a gaze full of profound confusion and growing dread. The quiet, unassuming waitress who had recommended the pinot noir just an hour ago was now standing amidst a war zone, holding a weapon, locked in a silent dialogue with forces far beyond the corporate boardrooms Julian usually inhabited.

“Elena! Clear the rear!” Marcus shouted from the darkness outside, his boots crunching on the gravel.

Elena did not lower her wooden club. She kept her eyes fixed on the groaning gunman at her feet, who was desperately trying to crawl toward his lost firearm. With a swift, merciless kick, Elena sent the pistol sliding across the slippery floorboards into the far corner near the wine rack. She turned her head slightly toward the back exit, torn between her desperate desire to remain invisible and the inescapable duty to protect the innocent lives trapped in the crossfire.

Julian finally found his voice again, stronger this time, though still laced with shock. “They’re… they’re after the documents, aren’t they?” he asked, looking up at Elena with desperate eyes.

Elena stopped. Her shoulders stiffened beneath the blood-spattered white shirt. She slowly turned her head to look down at Julian. The question hung heavily between them, loaded with implications that neither of them could easily dismiss. Julian wasn’t just a wealthy diner; his tailored suit and expensive watch were markers of a high-level corporate auditor—someone who had likely uncovered something lethal hidden within the ledgers of a conglomerate with deep, dangerous ties.

“If you want to live,” Elena said quietly, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper, “you need to stop asking questions and start running.”

Before Julian could respond, the front entrance was flooded with the harsh, blinding beams of tactical flashlights. Shouts echoed from the street as heavily armed local police officers poured through the shattered storefront, their weapons drawn and voices commanding everyone to freeze. Elena looked at the advancing officers, then back at Julian, calculating the exit routes in a matter of seconds. She knew that once the authorities arrived, the real interrogation would begin—and she could not afford to be identified.
