Chapter 5

The heavy oak doors of the east atrium swung open with a resounding thud, admitting a phalanx of federal investigators in dark tactical windbreakers, flanked by local law enforcement officers. The murmurs in the ballroom died instantly, replaced by a suffocating hush. Flashbulbs from the media stationed outside began to strobe through the tall arched windows, casting erratic shadows across the white marble floor. Julian Vance did not flinch as the federal lead agent, a woman with iron-grey hair and a sharp, no-nonsense demeanor, strode directly toward them. Marcus Vance stood slightly behind Julian, his posture remaining military-straight, acting as an invisible shield against the chaos erupting around them. Arthur Sterling remained rooted to the spot, his black tuxedo stained with the dark crimson evidence of Julian’s opening strike, looking like a king whose throne had crumbled to dust in a single second.

"Agent Miller," Arthur said, attempting to summon a shred of his former authority as the federal officer approached. "There seems to be an administrative misunderstanding here. This is a private foundation event."

Agent Miller did not acknowledge Arthur’s greeting. Instead, she stopped directly in front of Julian, her eyes scanning the younger man’s pristine white suit before shifting to the encrypted tablet in her hand. "Mr. Vance? We received the complete digital mirror of the Sterling-Vance Foundation archives approximately four minutes ago. Every transfer, every offshore ledger, and every signed authorization matches the scope of our grand jury subpoena."

"Agent, the data is authentic and uncompromised," Julian replied smoothly, his breathing measured and calm. "Mr. Sterling has been operating an unauthorized clearinghouse for corporate embezzlement under the guise of philanthropic investments."

Arthur let out a dry, humorless laugh. "And you think your hands are clean in all of this, Julian? You signed off on the initial asset distributions in two thousand and ten. You’re just as culpable as I am."

"I signed off under direct coercion while my father’s medical care was being held hostage by your legal team," Julian answered, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper that lacked any trace of hesitation. "I documented every threat. Agent Miller, check appendix omega in the file transfer."

Agent Miller tapped her tablet, her eyebrows rising slightly as she reviewed the newly decrypted files. She looked up at Arthur with absolute coldness. "Mr. Sterling, you are being placed under arrest for wire fraud, money laundering, and interstate extortion. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
