Chapter 11

In the pitch-black vault, Julian relied entirely on his sense of touch, sliding his fingers along the cold metal shelving until he found his tactical flashlight. He clicked the power switch; thankfully, the LED bulb flickered back to life, casting a stark, narrow beam against the concrete walls. Marcus was already examining the interior locking mechanism of the heavy steel door, pulling a micro-screwdriver set from his belt with practiced efficiency.
"The manual release isn't accessible from the inside on these older Cold War models," Marcus analyzed quietly, inspecting the reinforced hinges. "However, the ventilation shaft directly above the top shelf was designed for air circulation during extended emergency lockdowns. It leads directly to the maintenance tunnel behind the parking garage."
"Can we reach it?" Julian asked, his breathing remaining even and controlled.
"We don't have a choice," Marcus replied, boosting himself up onto the top metal rack. He reached up, unscrewing the four heavy iron bolts securing the metal ventilation grate with rapid, forceful twists of his tool. The grate fell inward with a dull clatter against the metal shelves. Marcus hoisted himself up into the dark, narrow opening, then extended a strong hand down to pull Julian up behind him.
Crawling through the ventilation shaft was an exercise in claustrophobia and raw physical endurance. The metal walls scraped against their shoulders as they propelled themselves forward through the dust and cold air. After what felt like hours of agonizing movement, a faint amber glow appeared ahead of them—the light leaking from Erika’s idling sedan in the sub-basement parking garage. Marcus pushed open the maintenance access hatch at the end of the shaft, dropping silently onto the concrete floor beside the vehicle, followed closely by Julian. Erika was leaning against the passenger door, smoking a cigarette in defiance of the garage rules, her eyes widening slightly as she saw them emerge from the wall panel.
"I thought you two were permanent fixtures of the Alpine banking system," Erika said dryly, tossing her cigarette onto the floor and grinding it out with her boot. "The local security network just went live across the entire district. We have less than three minutes before the Swiss federal police lock down this sector."
"Arthur left a final trap inside," Julian said, brushing dust off his sweater as he climbed into the back seat. "He knew about the vault. He knew about the key."
"He didn't just know," Marcus added, pulling his tactical jacket tight as he slid into the front passenger seat. "Arthur was working in concert with the Zurich board until the very end. The arrest in New York was a tactical retreat to protect their European holdings."
Erika put the sedan into gear, spinning the tires against the damp concrete as she accelerated toward the exit ramp. "Where to now? The airports are already being monitored by Interpol under emergency corporate stabilization acts."

"We don't go to an airport," Julian replied, his voice hardening with absolute resolve. "We go directly to the Swiss Federal Prosecutor’s private residence. We bypass the banking commission entirely."
