The Voice Memo

At 4:00 AM, David and Marcus sat in an unmarked car parked outside Emma’s sealed house. Police tape fluttered in the pre-dawn breeze across the front porch.

David held Emma’s cracked smartphone, connecting it to a portable forensic drive Marcus had retrieved from his office.

"Emma was an architect," David explained, his fingers navigating the phone’s cloud backups. "She recorded every single design consultation and contractor meeting. She never went into a room without a voice memo running in the background."

The screen flickered. A file titled Kitchen_Inspection_Final.m4a appeared on the desktop, timestamped 8:42 PM the previous evening.

David pressed play.

The audio began with the sound of cabinets opening, followed by heavy footsteps.

“You shouldn't have come back here, Julian,” Emma’s voice sounded clear and calm over the speaker.

“Give me the safe keys, Emma,” Julian’s recorded voice replied, sharp and agitated. “Madison’s lawyers are waiting. The notary is already at the club.”

“I’m not signing the North Ridge land over to Vale Pharmaceuticals. You’re building low-income housing on toxic marshland. I saw the soil analysis.”

“Nobody cares about the soil, Emma! They care about the tax write-offs! Give me the keys!”

A violent crash echoed—the sound of wood snapping, followed by a sickening thud against marble and Emma’s sharp, agonizing scream.

“Look what you made me do,” Julian’s cold voice muttered over the recording. “Now I don't need your signature at all. Incapacitation gives me power of attorney anyway.”

The sound of a front door slamming shut ended the file.

David sat in the dark car, tears burning his eyes, while Marcus closed his laptop with a quiet, terrifying snap.

"That’s not a custody dispute," Marcus said. "That’s attempted first-degree murder."
