The Iron Gavel

At 9:30 AM, Julian Vance walked briskly up the wide granite steps of the County Courthouse, flanked by Arthur Sterling and three junior partners from his corporate legal firm.

He held an embossed leather briefcase containing the forged power-of-attorney orders, intent on filing an emergency motion for sole guardianship before noon.

"Make sure the judge signs the sealing order on the medical records," Julian instructed Sterling, adjusting his cufflinks. "I don't want any press getting wind of—"

"Julian Vance?"

A group of four plainclothes detectives from the Major Crimes Division stepped out from behind the courthouse pillars, badges displayed on their lapels. Flanking them was Assistant District Attorney Elena Rossi.

Julian stopped, his smile faltering. "What is the meaning of this? I am on my way to an urgent civil hearing."

"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault resulting in severe bodily harm, corporate fraud, and evidence tampering," ADA Rossi stated, her voice echoing off the marble facade for every passing reporter and attorney to hear.

"This is absurd!" Sterling intervened, stepping forward. "My client is a respected developer—"

"Save it for the arraignment, counselor," the lead detective said, stepping behind Julian, grabbing his arms, and snapping a pair of steel handcuffs around his wrists. "We have the audio file from the kitchen. We also have the surveillance footage of you throwing the residence's external security hard drive into a dumpster on 4th Street last night."

Julian’s face went gray. The briefcase slipped from his numb fingers, spilling legal briefs and corporate seals across the cold stone steps.

Reporters swarmed from the sidewalk, camera flashes exploding in a blinding wall of light as Julian was escorted down the steps toward an awaiting police cruiser, stripped of his wealth, his influence, and his freedom.
