The First Touch

Three days later, Emma was cleared to leave the ICU in a wheelchair.

David wheeled her down the sunny corridor of the maternity wing into the quiet sanctuary of the NICU. The nurses stepped aside, smiling warmly as Emma was brought to bay three.

The incubator top was opened by Dr. Linwood.

"Wash your hands with the antiseptic wash, Emma," Dr. Linwood instructed gently. "You can hold him against your chest for kangaroo care. It helps his heart regulate."

Emma washed her trembling hands, her heart pounding with a fierce, overwhelming love. David helped her stand up carefully, supporting her weight as she sat in the plush rocking chair positioned beside the unit.

Dr. Linwood carefully lifted the tiny infant, swaddled in a miniature warm blanket, navigating the delicate monitoring wires, and placed him gently onto Emma’s bare chest.

Leo was so light he felt like a warm autumn leaf. His tiny chest rose and fell rapidly, his soft, downy head resting directly above Emma’s heartbeat.

Emma wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in the crown of his head, smelling the sweet, pure scent of new life.

"Hi, Leo," Emma whispered, her voice breaking with pure devotion. "I’m your mommy. You’re safe now. You never have to be afraid again."

As if recognizing the sound of the voice that had spoken to him in the dark for seven months, the baby’s tiny fingers reached out, his translucent hand wrapping completely around Emma’s index finger with surprising, unbreakable strength.

David turned away, wiping a tear from his cheek, while Marcus stood in the doorway, a rare, genuine smile softening his rugged face.
