The Scent of Betrayal

At the Capital Club, four miles downtown, crystal flutes clinked beneath chandeliers draped in silk.
Julian Vance sat in an executive leather booth, adjusting his silk tie. Across from him sat Madison Vale, heiress to the Vale Pharmaceutical conglomerate. Her nails were manicured in crimson, tapping against the leather-bound contracts lying between their champagne glasses.
"Is it done?" Madison asked, her lips curving into a practiced, elegant smile.
"The signature pages are signed," Julian said smoothly, taking a sip of scotch. He tapped his breast pocket, where Emma’s forged power-of-attorney documents rested against his chest. "By midnight, the residential land parcels in the North Ridge development will be transferred into the Vale-Vance holding trust. Emma won't be able to contest it."
"And your wife?" Madison asked, arching an eyebrow. "She’s stubborn, Julian. An architect doesn't easily surrender her life's blueprints."
"Emma is unwell," Julian lied without a flicker of hesitation. "The pregnancy has been complicated. She had a fall earlier tonight. I’ve arranged for private medical care at St. Catherine’s under Dr. Mercer’s supervision. Once the child is born, she’ll receive a generous settlement and a quiet house in Vermont."
Madison smiled, satisfied. "Business requires clean edges, Julian. No loose threads."

Julian’s phone vibrated on the tablecloth. The caller ID flashed: Private Security - Residence.
He declined the call with a flick of his thumb, turning his attention back to the champagne. He had spent his entire life calculating risk versus reward, convinced that every human heart had a price tag. He had no idea that sixty blocks away, the foundation he had built on betrayal was already crumbling.
