Chapter 8: Echoes in the Steam Tunnels

The labyrinth of concrete steam tunnels stretched endlessly ahead in the absolute darkness. Mateo crawled as fast as his injured leg would allow, wincing every time his calf brushed against the abrasive floor. Behind him, Elena moved like a ghost, her breathing shallow and controlled to avoid making noise. Far back down the tunnel, the muffled sound of heavy boots echoing against the concrete walls sent a spike of pure terror through her system. They were inside the tunnel, and they were gaining ground.
""Mom, I can't breathe,"" Mateo whispered, his voice trembling as he stopped near a rusted intersection where two pipes hissed loudly with escaping steam. Elena scrambled forward, pulling him tightly against her side in the pitch blackness. ""Keep moving, *mi amor*, just a little further,"" she pleaded, her voice breaking. She could hear the faint beam of tactical flashlights cutting through the dust motes far behind them, casting dancing white beams against the curved ceiling of the pipe corridor.
Suddenly, a bright white light swept around the concrete bend just twenty yards behind them. ""Target acquired!"" a harsh voice shouted down the pipe, the sound magnified by the acoustics of the metal infrastructure. Panic surged. Elena grabbed Mateo by the waist and dragged him around a sharp corner, plunging them into absolute shadow just as a hail of rubber riot bullets ricocheted off the brick wall where they had been sitting a second prior.
They scrambled blindly down a descending ramp that sloped toward the old laundry loading dock. The air grew cooler, carrying the faint, metallic scent of rain and city exhaust from the street outside. But the heavy footsteps behind them never slowed. The operatives were closing the distance, their military training making short work of the difficult terrain. Elena’s lungs burned, and her muscles ached with exhaustion, but the primal need to protect her son fueled her every movement.

At the end of the ramp stood a heavy, rusted metal fire door held shut by a rusted chain. Without hesitating, Elena slammed her shoulder against the barrier. It didn't budge. She threw her entire body weight against the iron panel, Mateo helping by pushing with his small hands, bracing his good leg against the base of the frame. With a screech of tortured metal, the rusted chain snapped, and the door burst outward into the cool night air.
