Chapter 12: Chasing Ghosts on the Express

The passenger car swayed rhythmically as the midnight express hurtled through the darkened countryside, leaving the sprawling neon glow of the city far behind. Inside the warm cabin, Mateo had finally fallen into a deep, exhausted sleep with his head resting securely in Elena’s lap. Across the aisle, Dr. Sarah Vance sat staring intently at the screen of a burner laptop she had purchased at the station kiosk, her fingers flying across the plastic keys as she attempted to decrypt the data she had downloaded from the hospital's central server before her departure.
""Find anything useful?"" Elena asked quietly, careful not to wake her sleeping son. Sarah didn't look up from the screen, her brow furrowed in intense concentration. ""More than I wanted to,"" she murmured. ""This facility off Route 9 isn't an isolated research lab. It's a frontline installation for a much larger consortium called Apex Bio-Tech. They have government defense contracts to develop neural-interface soldiers.""
Elena’s blood ran cold. ""Child soldiers?"" she whispered, the horror of the phrase hanging heavy in the air. ""Not soldiers in the traditional sense,"" Sarah clarified, finally looking up and meeting Elena’s terrified gaze. ""They're building organic intelligence networks—children whose enhanced sensory processing and cognitive stamina allow them to remotely pilot autonomous defense drones and process encrypted data streams faster than any supercomputer.""
Sarah turned the laptop screen toward Elena. Displayed on the monitor was a detailed organizational chart, listing project directors, financial backers, and security chiefs. At the very top of the security division was a name Elena recognized instantly: Marcus Vance. Sarah flinched slightly as Elena’s eyes locked onto the surname. ""Marcus is my brother,"" Sarah confessed, her voice dropping to a harsh, pained whisper. ""He runs their corporate security division. That's why I knew about their tracking hardware. That's why he was assigned to hunt us down tonight.""
The betrayal cut deep. Elena pulled back slightly, her protective instincts flaring anew. ""So this is a trap?"" she demanded, her voice rising in sudden panic. ""You led us right onto this train so your brother could intercept us?"" Sarah shook her head vehemently, tears of frustration glistening in her eyes. ""No! I haven't spoken to Marcus in five years since he joined that syndicate. He despises everything I stand for, and he would sacrifice me without a second thought if it meant securing his asset.""

Before Elena could respond, the train's rhythmic clatter shifted. The engine’s horn blared a long, mournful warning, and the carriage suddenly jerked violently as emergency brakes engaged. Outside the windows, the countryside vanished as red and blue strobe lights flashed fiercely against the glass, illuminating a blockade of unmarked black SUVs parked directly across the tracks ahead.
