Chapter 13: Ambush on the Rails

The emergency brakes shrieked with agonizing intensity, throwing luggage from overhead racks and sending passengers tumbling into the aisles. Mateo startled awake with a sharp cry, grabbing onto Elena’s shirt in sheer terror. ""What's happening?"" the boy shouted over the grinding roar of the slowing train. ""Hold on to me!"" Elena screamed back, bracing herself against the opposing seat as the locomotive finally ground to a shuddering halt in the middle of a desolate forest crossing.
Outside, the strobe lights of the black SUVs cast violent, rhythmic flashes across the foggy windows of the passenger car. Through the glass, armed men in tactical gear poured out of the vehicles, surrounding the train with military precision. Sarah slammed her laptop shut, sliding it into her rucksack with trembling hands. ""They tracked the burner phone I used to check train schedules,"" Sarah said, realization dawning with sickening clarity. ""Marcus is out there.""
The heavy exterior door at the front of the carriage blew open with a deafening bang as a breaching charge sheared the electronic lock off its hinges. Thick white smoke billowed into the aisle, accompanied by the heavy, boots-on-metal sound of advancing operatives. ""Everybody stay in your seats! Keep your hands where we can see them!"" a harsh, amplified voice commanded through a tactical bullhorn from the vestibule.
Elena looked around frantically. There was no rear exit—the train had stopped on a high concrete trestle bridge spanning a deep, churning river canyon below. They were trapped. ""We have to jump,"" Elena said with absolute, terrifying conviction. Sarah stared at her in disbelief. ""Jump? Elena, we're fifty feet above a boulder-strewn river! We won't survive the fall.""
""We won't survive what your brother does to Mateo if they take us back,"" Elena countered fiercely, unbuckling her jacket and wrapping it securely around her son's shoulders. She kicked open the emergency exit window beside their row, shattering the safety glass with the heel of her boot and clearing the jagged edges away with swift efficiency. The roar of the river below rushed into the cabin, mingling with the shouts of the approaching operatives.
At that exact moment, the interior door of the passenger car was kicked open. Marcus Vance stepped through the smoke, dressed in a tailored tactical suit with his security badge gleaming on his lapel. His eyes scanned the car instantly, landing directly on his sister and Elena standing near the shattered window. ""Sarah. Don't be a fool,"" Marcus called out coldly, raising his hand to signal his men. ""You can't outrun Apex.""

""I'm not running, Marcus,"" Sarah shouted back over the noise of the river. ""I'm escaping!"" Without another second of hesitation, Elena scooped Mateo into her arms, grabbed Sarah’s wrist with her free hand, and together, the three of them pitched backward through the broken window into the open night air, plunging into the dark abyss below.
