Chapter 6: Shadows in the Corridor

The momentary relief in Trauma Room Three was shattered by a low, rhythmic chiming sound echoing from the hallway outside. Dr. Sarah Vance froze, her hand hovering inches from the surgical tray. She recognized that specific tone instantly—it wasn't a standard hospital page, but a localized proximity alert triggered when a secure terminal failed to receive a return ping from a registered biometric beacon.
""They figured out the spoof,"" Sarah whispered, her face draining of color. ""The ghost signal collapsed."" Elena’s head snapped toward the wired glass window of the heavy steel door. Through the reinforced pane, the blurred silhouettes of two large men in dark tactical jackets moved past the nurses' station, their heavy boots making sharp, authoritative clicks against the linoleum floor. They weren't hospital security; they moved with the calculated sweep-and-clear precision of private corporate enforcers.
""Mom,"" Mateo whimpered, clutching his sore calf where the red ring of irritated skin throbbed visibly. He tried to slide off the edge of the stretcher, but his injured leg buckled beneath him. Elena caught him swiftly, pulling him into her arms against her chest. ""Shh, my love, I've got you,"" she murmured, though her own voice was laced with mounting terror. She looked up at Sarah, panic clawing at her throat. ""They're here. How do we get out of here?""
Sarah scanned the room frantically. The windows facing the back alley were bolted shut with security grates, designed to prevent patient elopement from the psychiatric and trauma wards. There was only one exit, and the tactical team was currently standing right outside it. ""The maintenance shaft,"" Sarah said suddenly, pointing toward the supply closet in the corner of the trauma bay. ""It connects to the old sub-basement steam tunnels. It's cramped, dark, and filthy, but it leads out to the laundry loading dock two blocks away.""
A heavy, metallic thud echoed against the exterior door of the trauma room, followed by the sound of an electronic keycard being swiped through the digital reader. The locking mechanism buzzed angrily, flashing a red error light because Sarah had manually thrown the interior deadbolt. ""Doctor Vance! Open this door immediately,"" a flat, emotionless male voice commanded from the corridor, carrying through the steel with chilling clarity.

Sarah didn't hesitate. She rushed to the supply closet, shoving aside shelves filled with gauze pads, saline bags, and surgical gowns to reveal a narrow, square maintenance hatch set low into the drywall. She pulled the latch, and the metal door swung outward with a rusty groan. ""Go, now!"" Sarah hissed, motioning for Elena to push Mateo into the dark opening. Elena shoved the boy inside first, sliding in right behind him into the claustrophobic gloom, leaving Sarah alone in the trauma room as the heavy security door began to shudder under the weight of a forced entry.
