Chapter 11: An Unexpected Ally

Elena’s body went rigid as she spotted Dr. Sarah Vance walking purposefully across the dimly lit train station platform. She instinctively pulled Mateo closer, her hand sliding down to shield his injured leg from view. But Sarah raised both hands in a non-threatening gesture, stopping ten feet away to show she was unarmed. She carried only a weathered leather medical bag and a small canvas rucksack slung over one shoulder.
""You left your medical kit in the trauma room, Doctor,"" Elena whispered defensively as Sarah approached their bench. ""Did you follow us to hand us back to them?"" Sarah shook her head firmly, her expression a mix of exhaustion and absolute resolve. ""I didn't lead them here, Elena. I wiped my hospital access logs before I left through the staff exit. But I knew you wouldn't survive twenty-four hours without proper antibiotics for that leg wound.""
Sarah sat down on the wooden bench beside them, opening her leather bag to reveal sterile gauze, antiseptic ointment, and a bottle of broad-spectrum pills. She carefully rolled up Mateo’s pant leg, wincing sympathetically at the ugly, irritated circle of skin left by the tracker. ""This is infected,"" Sarah diagnosed quietly, her professional training instantly taking over. ""If we don't clean and dress it properly tonight, he'll develop sepsis within forty-eight hours.""
Mateo bit his lip as Sarah applied a cool antiseptic wipe to the wound, but he didn't cry out. Elena watched the doctor work, the wall of distrust slowly beginning to crumble. ""Why are you doing this, Sarah?"" Elena asked, her voice laced with genuine bewilderment. ""You had a stable career, a secure life inside that hospital. By helping us, you've thrown all of that away.""
Sarah paused, looking up from the boy’s leg, her eyes reflecting the flickering fluorescent lights of the station overhead. ""I took an oath, Elena. When I saw what Project Vanguard was doing to children—turning them into biological data points for corporate profit—I realized that staying inside the system made me complicit,"" Sarah explained quietly. ""They fired me ten minutes after I walked out of that trauma room anyway. My digital credentials have already been revoked. I'm running with you now.""
The midnight express train rolled into the station with a deafening screech of steel against iron, blowing a thick cloud of steam across the platform. The heavy doors slid open with a pneumatic hiss, revealing a brightly lit, nearly empty passenger car. Sarah packed her medical supplies away, zipped her bag, and looked toward the open doors. ""That's our train,"" Sarah said. ""San Benito is the end of the line. My sister has a secluded cabin near the cliffs there where we can lay low until we figure out our next move.""
May you like
Elena looked down at Mateo, then nodded in agreement. Together, the three of them boarded the train just as the doors slid shut, pulling away from the platform and disappearing into the rainy night.
