Chapter 7: The Psychiatric Evaluation

The sterile white walls of Dr. Aris Thorne’s downtown office smelled faintly of antiseptic and old paper books. David sat upright in a leather armchair, wearing a clean button-down shirt, while the middle-aged psychologist with silver-rimmed glasses typed notes into a sleek laptop. Dr. Thorne had spent the last hour putting David through rigorous cognitive, emotional, and stress-response testing.

"Your scores on the emotional regulation index are remarkably stable, Mr. Harrison, especially considering the acute trauma your family has recently undergone," Dr. Thorne said, pausing his typing to look over his glasses at David. "Most fathers in your position would exhibit severe acute stress disorder symptoms, yet your focus remains singularly anchored on your son's stabilization."

"Leo depends entirely on me right now," David replied calmly. "There is no room for a breakdown. My focus has to be absolute."

"And that brings me to the core observation of this evaluation," Dr. Thorne noted, turning his screen slightly toward David to show a graphical breakdown of his stress coping mechanisms. "You display a high degree of compartmentalization. It's an effective survival mechanism, but the court will want to know if you are suppressing your own trauma rather than processing it."

"I'm processing it by ensuring my son is safe and that the person who harmed him faces legal accountability," David stated firmly. "Is there any ambiguity in your report regarding my fitness as a primary guardian?"

Dr. Thorne shook his head slowly. "None whatsoever. You are clinically fit, emotionally stable, and uniquely suited to provide the specialized care Leo requires. However, I must note that Sarah's defense team has submitted a counter-evaluation claiming she suffers from a dissociative fugue state."

David scoffed quietly, shaking his head. "A dissociative fugue state doesn't make someone scream, 'Please don't touch my life! Your father isn't here anymore!' right before shoving a wheelchair into deep water. That was calculated resentment, not a blackout."

"The family court judge will review both reports during tomorrow's emergency injunction hearing," Dr. Thorne said, closing his laptop. "Be prepared for aggressive cross-examination regarding your six-month absence for work. Her attorneys will try to paint you as an absentee father who provoked the unstable domestic environment."

David stood up, shaking the psychologist's hand with a firm grip. "Let them try. The truth has a way of cutting through noise."
